I ride horses once a week for 45 minutes and I'm fine doing that. What's going on?

It's not unusual to not be overweight, but still out of shape. What you may need is to do some cardio exercises to build up your endurance. Yes, horseback riding is a good workout, but it's not a very efficient cardio routine. Try adding some jogging, running, rollerblading, etc. to your daily routine for about 30 minutes a day and your breathing will get better. Good luck!

Climbing stairs should be a lot more strenuous than sitting on a horse. If you're putting your weight on the stirrups as you ride briskly for a steady 45 minutes, then you'd be working out, but only if the horse is going faster than a walk.
Also, if certain muscles are developed for riding but not for stair climbing, then you'd get tired doing the latter.
Besides the horse riding, go for a walk 3 days a week for 20 minutes and see how you feel.

I did Ballet for a long time, but couldn't run a mile. The reason, because they are two different workouts. Ballet is not a cardio exercise nor is horse-riding. Its the cardio you need to work on. Cardio=heart. Make sure you get your heart rate up a bit, then you will know its working. I suggest cardio kickboxing or running. Horseback riding, the horse gets more cardio then you I am sure :D Good Luck :D

I'm not sure why you feel that horse back riding is helping you excercise, the horse is the one doing most of the work imho. Nevertheless, try doing cardio for 30 minutes 3 times a week - or even brisk walks. I'm sure in a few weeks you'll stop breathing hard so easily.

Talk to a pulmonary specialist. You may have a problem with your lungs. I started feeling tired all of the time. One day I could hardly hold my head up while riding in the car with my wife. She took me to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. A few days later I was diagnosed as having a pulmonary disorder. I take an inhaled medicine twice daily now to help rid my lungs of congestion that builds up in them due to pollen, dust, and atmospheric chemical damage. The reason I was feeling so tired all of the time was that my body wasn't getting enough oxygen because of congestion. Now I'm aware of he problem and know what signs to be on the alert for and can take another decongestant as needed to aid the inhalant.

Again, I think you should check with a pulmonary specialist.

You need more than one day a week of exercise. 30 minutes of cardio every day should get you in shape quickly.

ask your doctor. My friend is the same way, doctor found out that even though he wasn't feeling it, he was having a lot of acid reflux and basically instead of breathing in oxygen, he ended up breathing back in the gas that was coming out of him.
