I am single so I always travel alone. I visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket many times. The first thing, you have to read about the country and pick what you like to see. Its more economically than to go in Tours and many times they take you to places that do not appeal to you. Get a taxi and point to them where you like to go. You are free and can roam about as much as you like. Also i booked hotels in the centre of the city. You find everything at reach. About hotels I never bothered about the stars whether it 4 or 5. A room with a shower and toilet was enough for me. Thai airlines are very good, so are JAL once you are travelling from Japan. Thai people are really beautiful. I came to love them.Remember the beaches are beautiful. Find a hotel near the beaches. Pick a very good sandals and very light clothes. Take with you pills against diarrhoea. I am serious. You enjoy sitting down sipping a drink during the night at the beaches. Enjoy yourself my friend. Include PHUKET in your itenerary. A year ago I spent nearly a month in Thailand and I intend to go back in 2008.

It depends where you want to go to in Thailand. However, just book your flight to Bangkok, nomore. Any domestic flight within Thailand is cheaper to pay there then if you booked it in advance.
Once there, then DON'T take a cab to the sity if you want to see Bangkok (They rip you off), there is a bus No 1 right in front of the airport, that goes downtown.
And then, downtown, go "soi Nana" or "Sukhumvit" to find one of the big expensive hotels or go "New Petchburi Road, Soi 36, and there into a guesthouse, not so nice, but cheap)
If you want to go elsewhere in the country, just book your journey by plane or bus on the airport, get there and look for guesthouses whereever you'll arrive. There are plenty everywhere and they are cheap. So don't book anything in Thailand in advance.

It will be expensive to do it in Japan. Just get a flight out to Bangkok and make your accommodation booking online. As for travel, you can do it when you are in Thailand. The travel agencies can easily get you onto a package quite cheaply.

try asia room for hotel booking . their rate are quite good and also can charge in your currency.
and look at the hotel travel for hotel rating
Hotel Thailand with some sightseeing tour
But I heard it is better of to book your tour at the hotel in Thailand.
I will be there in Sept/ Oct as well.
