An igloo is made of ice. If it were real hot at the ice-air interface the igloo would melt. However, the purpose of the igloo is to cut down on the wind. Plus when you're inside your body does transfer heat to the air, some of which transfers on to the snow/ice walls of the igloo.

So I guess the answer is it's not as cold inside the igloo as it is outside with the wind howling, but at the same time my jacuzzi is much warmer than any darn igloo so I'll choose jacuzzi over igloo any day of the week.

I built an igloo when I was a kid and it wasn't what you could say "warm" inside, but it did have about a 20 degree difference than outside. It also protected me from the wind. I'm not sure how the Eskimoes had fires in them since the smoke would be a problem as well as melting, but the Indians had teepees which acted in the same way. Eskimoes are actually Indians too so they have the same idea, except the Eskimoes used what was widely available to them for building material...SNOW!

no... snow is actually a great insulator.... granted that it is not directly on your skin. it woudn't be as warm as inside your hosue.. but it would be ALOT warmer thatn standing otu in a blizzard. with a warm suit and warm blankets an igloo can be pretty cozy.
there are actually people who pay LOADS of money to stay in an ice castle (i beleive it is in a country in the UK) and its basically a giant igloo... the walls ceiling and flors are all ice.. and msot of the furniture as well.. they use ice fro glasses and serving platters... they do a really nice job of it.. pretty fancy for being so cold! but every client gets their own fur blankets in their room.

well, its still cold inside an igloo. its not 68 degrees like your house might be, they still have to wear coats and whatnot, but it its warmer in an igloo than the surrounding environment they were built in by any means.

I'm sure it is cold, it's made out of ice. But you take away the wind chill factor and warm bodies inside and it will be less cold than being outside in the elements.

eskimos build those to help em keep warm. it could be cold still but not same temperature outside ofcourse. i read somewhere that igloos are actually made from ice itself. just not quite sure about it.

It's not uncommon for the temperature to reach 50 degrees below zero in the winter in interior Alaska.

One winter in Fairbanks a few years back, there was a 6-week period where the HIGH for 6 weeks was 20 below zero.

So if you come in from 40 below zero to about 25 above zero, it feels pretty warm.

No. It is warm inside. It is lined with furs, there is a fire, and it is a shelter from the cold outside.
