Good question...Yes I have read about this ceremony and it made my physically uncomfortable with every word. It is very interesting to note that just before Jospeh Smith initiated this ritual he had just recently been brought in as a Freemason, which begs the question of how much he "borrowed" from this group. The ceremony as with all religions ceremonies is of course about symbolism: a green apron(that covers your naughty parts to symbolize Adam & Eve), but that does not change the fact that it is a little unnatural to wash down entire bodies with oil. Granted this practice has been revised since 1990 and was revised again in 2005..I wonder why the mormon god keeps changing his mind about his sacred rites? As far as the Waco bit goes I think I know where you are coming from. David Koresh was known for bizarre rituals, and the KKK well....Let's just say the mormon church hasn't always practiced Affirmative Action...

I've never heard about the naked body rub down with oil...what is your source for that?
A lot of the Mormon temple ceremonies were influenced by Mason ceremonies (Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church was a Mason). These ceremonies are considered sacred and secret, and you would really have to be a member to understand the symbolism behind all of them. My parents are Mormon, and they tried to raise my siblings and me to be Mormon (to no avail). I never went to the temple when I was growing up, but I discovered what went on in the temple ceremonies once I moved out on my own (exmormon.org), and my reaction was similar to yours – I was completely creeped out, but probably on a much deeper level than you because I was picturing my parents doing this stuff! The Mormon Church keeps the ceremonies secret from all of the members who aren’t worthy to participate in them yet (you have to be married, pay tithing, the list goes on..), so I had no idea what my parents were doing when they went to the temple. I have A LOT of issues with the Mormon church that I don’t care to get into right now….but I have to say, for the most part, the church members are genuinely nice people who provide a lot of service for their community (food pantries, thrift stores, etc). Yes, their temple rituals are weird, but they aren’t hurting anyone, they are practicing their beliefs. They have a right to do so, just like any other religion… but they still creep me out, I can’t help but feel that way! Aarrrggh...bad Mormon memories!!!!

I happened on your question and was intrigued by it.
I don't think you're being sassy and you have a right to be ticked if this is what they did to you.
Boy.
That's really sick stuff. Reminds me of secret society rituals in Europe. The Masons use to have something like that and made Mozart go through one of those. Didn't help his career any, either.
What I'm curious about is, what impressed you as it being
" Waco-KKK "? ( Or did you mean " whack - oh " ? I"m not at all being facetious, I assure you.)
It doesn't really affect me, but I was in Utah for a few months. Hated every minute of it. It's a strange place like the rest of the state. Then again, any population center at this point is going to carry with it the bizarre in large concentrations.
Personally, I wouldn't go back there. It did in fact strike me as that kind of place. Last - leg KKK hiding behind a ' religion '.

I've never heard that before, but I know the Mormon religion has some, shall we say unusual aspects. I actually kind of like to defend them just because a) the Mormons I have known have been very very very nice people, b) they get ripped on more than witches and atheists on some boards, and c) I personally think it's so easy to discount their beliefs that it's not even worth arguing over. That sounds very intolerant, and I don't mean it that way - people should believe whatever works for them - but it makes absolutely no sense to me.

C'mon now people...it's all relative (considering we're talking about Mormon's, no pun intended). Every religious subgroup and/or sect is filled with it's own version of creepy ceremonies. I think the whole abstaining from sex and marriage forced on Priests and Nuns is creepy. Eating the Body and drinking the blood of your savior is creepy. Covering up for and basically condoning the molestation of children is creepy...and all of that is just Catholicism.

They all have that glazed-over look in their eyes, too. We see it. I can tell you that you are only one of many who feel the way you do about that religion. I have heard it from current LDS members, too. It's VERY weird and very wrong. It's typical brainwashing stuff that religions have to do, to keep the parishoners controlled by fear, thus, the money flowing. It's simple economics.

It's very sad to see so much ignorance from so many people. Well, at least we can see that people are people all over the world, and they fear what they don't understand.
Sorry, don't let me get in your way of "open season on the Mormons". After all, the Mormons do so much bad to so many people, I'm sure they deserve all your hate and ridicule... (/sarcasm)
