Last minute booking is never that cheap unless you are not choosy about where you go. If you know where you want to go the best thing is to book as early as possible. Otherwise you're getting a load of leftovers! Many airlines (Ryanair etc) actually get more expensive not less as it gets closer dpeature time - logic being you're more desperate so more ready to fly.

What I would personally have done (as you are probably well on your way somewhere now) is go to something like www.moneysavingexpert.com/flightchecker and found the cheapest deal I could to somewhere that took my fancy. I'd then go on www.priceline.co.uk and bag myself a cheap hotel.
