Here is a great illustrated site for whelping and mom and puppy management.> http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/whelping.html

do be sure to have a canned puppy formula on hand, as well as a human baby bottle with a newborn Nuk nipple. It is too hard to get it by the time you realize you need it..You won't be wasting the formula, if you don't need it, as they puppies can eat it when you are weaning them..warmed and poured over their food..
Labs often have more puppies than they can nrse, so you will want to have this on hand..If there are pups much larger than the others, I like to feed the largest ones twice a day with the formula, so the smaller ones can have more of mom's milk..It produces nice even, healthy litters..

Show her where her whelping box is so she can start to nest and feel comfortable in it (in a quiet room). Put lots of newspapers in it as well as an old blanket for her. Stay close to her when she's whelping in case she needs some help. Some females want their owners help, others don't. If she lets you help, you can help dry the puppies with a towel (don't try to move them out of her reach), make sure their mouth and nose are clear and they're breathing well. I never liked letting the mother bite the cord because they sometimes cause hernias. It's up to you but you can either let her do it or cut the cord with scissors, then tie it with thread. Also, females like to eat the afterbirth, and while it's good for them to have 1 or 2, you probably want to take the rest away because she'll get the runs.

They like to be in a quiet room, usually with only 1 person with them.

Just keep an eye on her basicaly. Instinct will take over for your dog and she will do exactly what she needs to do. But keep an eye out for excessive struggling for your dog, if it gets to be too hard and she just can't expel the pups, then get her to a vet.
Don't allow her to give birth in her dog bed...get a very large box, and some old sheets you can throw out. Its going to be a mess.
Wait until everything is all over with, get rid of all the garbage, and let your dog be with her pups.
Good luck.

One thing my dad did, and swore it was the best thing, was to buy one of those small plastic kiddie pools. Put some blankets in it for mom. Helped with the mess, and afterwards helped to contain the puppies till they were old enough to venture out.

just make sure she is comfortable and after she has the puppies put them in a clean and dry place where it is warm if it is winter.

If you do not know what to do when your dog is having puppies then you should not be breeding your dog
