The only way to gain knowledge is through an open mind. My political views have softened by listening and watching. My religious views have clarity from listening to bigots who speak and act in contradiction to one another.

Your Mother was right, there will always be differing and clashing opinions between people on these two subjects. Your Mother was also wrong. We should discuss politics and religion. The problem occurs when people "discuss" in a way that says "I am right, you are wrong. I will always be right, you will always be wrong. The ONLY way you will be right is to change your thinking to match mine." That's not discussing, that's inciting contention. It's unprofitable, and doesn't do anything productive. It turns people away from even examining their own beliefs and thoughts on the subject.

These are very important parts of people's lives, and there is nothing more important than discussing them. Without these discussions, how can we learn and grow as people?

The key is that if you are going to discuss these things, you need to be nonjudgemental and open minded. The only way that people should get angry is if you are unwilling to try to look at things from their points of view. I have friends from all different ideologies and beliefs, and it is thrilling to talk about our differences, because we all know that nobody will put us down or ridicule us for what we believe.

true. the debates, arguments, clashes of ideas would remain present. but how would you learn? would you rather stay at the back of the row every time a discussion would ensue? an idle minds begets ignorance. would you want to be one?

the point is, to hear other people's thoughts or views on such topics should be considered a way of developing one's intellect. and the practice of expressing one's idea builds self-confidence and high-esteem. also, to learn about respecting one's opinion would be adhered and observed, and would make you grow as a person, as an individual. how else would you know about the difference of faiths, difference of ideals, unless the topic of such be obscure from you?

if you're parents subject you to such acts... then follow them. but continue to reas and participate in this yahoo answers. that way, you'll learn. also, get involve in your school debates. if they told you you're disobeying them by participating in school, well tell them, it's just a project and it was assigned as a group... good luck...

Where does it say that in the Bible?

When people fail to discuss religion, the devil wins.

When people fail to discuss politics, the devil wins.

Your mother is probably a very sweet and wonderful person, but she's wrong on this one.

Without the clash of differing ideas and without the struggle of defending those ideas and accepting new ones as better and making more sense how can you ever expect to grow in faith? The struggle is healthy and growing hurts but ultimately strengthens us.

That people who are mature can agree to disagree, and it's good to see where your friends and enemies stand on things. So talking politics/religion is all well and good if the people are open. If the people feel like they have to assimilate everything you say, or hatefully disagree, then don't discuss things that might offend them with them.

The "advice" itself was (by the use of the words) a discussion of religion and politics, so she recognized that sometimes the advice does not hold.

That's precisely why I like discussing politics and religion.

mom says too. for obvious reasons. giving out opinions (as politely as possible) is okay. just dont push things too hard and do not insist. we have our own views and the way to do it is to respect the idea that people think differently.
