I don't like being over protected by my parents cause they won't let me go to night clubs with my former friends. They don't want me going out to night clubs here in the United States and that's bull. Well I don't have to go to night clubs just in the Philippines it could be in Las Vegas or in California for pete's sake.

Overprotecting is definetly bad for the child's development, but the other extreme, neglect, is also very very bad.

Parents should try to find a balance between the two, which is very hard to do, because they only have their childhoods (which were decades ago =) as a reference.
If they are overprotecting you, try to explain to them how you feel, and tell them to loosen up a bit... but don't be angry with them. Being a parent must be very difficult, and overprotectiveness is a sign that they love you.

In high school I considered myself "overprotected", but even then I had 3 or 4 friends that looked to ME as their mother figure because their parents didn't give a crap. So, it's way better than the alternative.

I don't like being overprotected but i know why they do it. They do it because they care about us and don't want anything to happen to us. I would be overprotected if i had a kid

I am a parent now, but when I was younger my parent's were over protective of me. I didn't mind it at all because I knew they just cared and it wasn't about them being in control and trying to be mean. I have five kids today and I am the same way. I respect my parent's for the way they raised me. If they weren't so caring and protective, I might have turned out like a real junky. Don't resent them. They just love you and want you to be safe. Thank them. I am very close to my parent's and so thankful.

yes because it makes me feel safe. even when my mum says i don't like when you order pizza late when you're by yourself, i tell her MUM I'M 17 and smile to myself. it's good being protected but my mum never goes overboard. i go out when i want as late as i want as long as i have my cell on or call her some other way to let her know i'm safe. it's nice knowing that you won't get kidnapped without someone realizing soon enough to bring you back alive.
