If something sounds ridiculous, it probably is.
While there are theological reasons to disagree with the Roman Catholic Church, there are no Satanists in the Vatican.

Pope Paul VI was noted as saying: "From some fissure, the smoke of Satan has entered the sanctuary."
No one knows exactly what he meant by this.
My guess is he was reflecting upon the state of both the world, and the church.
Also, Jesus never promised to protect the church from the attacks of the devil, he promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against his church.
Spiritual warfare keeps a church, and its' body fit, and ready for action.
