Cannae is the bloodiest Single day battle per square mile. Many world war One battles had more casualties but over many days. The Somme took place on a 25 mile front, Cannae took place in 3 square miles. The dead at Borodino were under 35,000. the first day of the somme had 24,000 combined dead. The Dead at cannea are over 80,000. For the mongolian battle that was the size of the forces not the dead. And casualties do not mean dead. at panipat Casualties at 100,000.

Borodino. September 7th, 1812. Slugfest between Napoleon's Grande Armée and the Russians. Firepower versus massed charges. Napoleonic battles were pretty bad to begin with because of the tightly packed formations, extremely limited ranges of the firearms of the day, and the up close and personal application of the shock and fire tactics of the day.

The day ended so badly for both sides that precise casualty figures are unknown: The lowest estimate is around 50,000 total for both sides, all the way upto 110,000 or so (the French and Russians both had around 150,000 each). This means in a single day, one out of every three men had fallen. Given 12 hours of daylight to fight in, that's just shy of 10,000 casualties an hour, or roughly 150 men killed or wounded every minute of daylight (I'm doing the math in my head).

It's a good thing we don't have Napoleonic style linear battlefields anymore. Compared to that, even the First World War massacres look tame.

Antietam. In the civil war
Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle, but that lasted about 3 days. Antietam was the single bloodiest day.

8th of November

"On the 8th of November the angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire raining down and the hell all around
There were few men left standing that day
Saw the eagle fly through a clear blue sky
1965, the 8th of November"

I'm not sure if that is really the bloodiest. Haven't looked it up yet.

The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
Perhaps not a battle in the proper sense, but nonetheless bloody, that brought the "world battle" to a definite end.
