Maracas!
Yes! fun and easy.

Turn the paper plates upside down and decorate the bottom of them with pens or crayons.
Use bright colors and bold patterns
You can even choose a them like Halloween, New Year's, Birthday, clowns,or friend faces

Put the plates together with your designs on the outside, and staple around the edge.

Leave an opening which you will use to fill your maracas.

Take a piece of paper and fold it in half.

This will be used as a funnel to fill your maracas with ease.
Place a handful rice into the folded paper.
Pour the filling into the opening.
Staple the last opening of the plate shut, with no gaps for the filling to escape.

If you want you can also staple the colored streamers to the side of the plate

Have fun with your new Maracas

Rice would be difficult for tiny hands to handle. How about macaroni- gluing different macaroni shapes on paper to make "pictures". Perhaps you could do something different with the rice, for example put it in a container that can be shaken like a rattle, and have them decorate the container.

Dye the rice with food coloring in blue, green, yellow, brown and red. Lay it out flat to dry.Take a coloring book page with a scene of sun, a tree, some grass and a barn (or whatever could use those colors) and use Elmer's glue to paste colored rice in the spaces.

If you have artistic talent, you can make your own coloring book pages.

How about instead of bean bag pillows-----how about 'rice bag' pillows, you could supervise them using pieces of different color material and fabric glue let them make shapes then glue all sides except one then fill w/rice then glue the last side. If you happen to try this I hope they like it.

mix with pva and use brushes to paste onto card - can add glitter, paint etc.. as the pva will make it all stay on the pic - however does make the brushes all sticky - could use glue spreaders though

just let them play with it - cooked / uncooked in a tray - add food colouring to make it change colour - add water to make it change texture etc.. Very scientific

Colored Rice Art
By Brenda Hyde
When little ones are still at home while their brothers or sisters are in school all day parents need easy crafts to occupy them and give the day some structure. They often feel left out and having a craft time each day makes little ones feel like they aren't missing the fun. Here is an easy and frugal craft activity that will do the trick:

Colored Rice Art
You'll need:
uncooked white rice
food coloring
white vinegar
non-toxic glue
cardboard or paper
pencil

Place 1/2 cup rice into a clean butter bowl or other recycled container. Add 5 drops of food coloring and 1/2 tsp. vinegar to set the color. Mix around until the rice has colored. Spread rice flat onto a baking sheet covered with foil or parchment paper. Bake at 200 degrees for 45 minutes to dry the rice. You can make more than one color at the same time. Keep the colors separate and in one layer on the cookie sheet. After they are dry and have cooled, place each color in a snack size plastic bag and seal.

PROJECTS: You can use these to make mosaic pictures with the kids. Have them draw a shape or a simple picture and then glue the rice onto the shape, using patches of different colors or creating a pattern of some sort. You can write their name in fat letters that they can fill in with the rice. Use this to teach colors also by asking them to use certain colors on certain sections of a picture. Create an interesting bookmark by cutting a 2 inch by 6-8 inch long piece of cardboard and have them glue the rice on the cardboard till it's full. Carefully cover the cardboard on both sides with clear Contact paper. Trim the edges and they have a neat bookmark!

Colored Rice
A NON- TOXIC alternative to glitter and
sand for the young artist.
Use with white glue on paper as a collage
medium or it can be glued on other surfaces
to add texture. Teach your little ones their letters,
by placing the rice onto a letter written in glue.
After it dries, they can trace the letter with their
finger tip.

Rice & Beans: Submitted by Mae McLean. I've filled a large plastic storage container (a long shallow one
that you would use to store sweaters) with dried beans and rice. I toss in some spoons, cups and other
kitchen gadgets and let the kids go to town! Or, I've separated the rice and beans into small containers and
let the children pour and sort. Because it can be a bit messy, I put a plastic table cloth or sheet underneath.
My children have so much fun with this and it keeps them busy for hours.

How to Make Colored Rice or Pasta Shapes for Crafts
These are very simple instructions for coloring your own rice or pasta to use with craft activities. The smell
of the rubbing alcohol isn't that great until things dry, but it's much better than spending good money on the
small, expensive packages of this at the craft store!

Buy simple rubbing alcohol at your local discount store. Buy cheap pasta shapes or rice. Or, use the pasta or rice that has had weevils in it. You're not eating it after all. Cover rice or pasta shapes with rubbing alcohol. Its best to do this in a non-metal container. Add food coloring until you get the desired shade you want. Let set for awhile, and this could be a long while depending on the shade of color you want the rice or pasta shapes to have. When desired color is reached spread rice or pasta shapes out on waxed paper until dry. The alcohol evaporates and the smell should go away. Make sure that the rice or pasta shapes are completely dried out again before you store them!

Feathered Friends
While studying farm animals Shauna R. helps preschool children make a feathered animal that you see on a
farm.
Materials: Gold and orange yarn, and brown rice.
Description: Teachers pre cut a duck for all of your children. Then give each child a handful of gold and
orange yarn cut into small pieces. The gold yarn is used for the beak of the duck. Then you use the orange
yarn for the feet. The children then spread glue over the rest of the ducks body, pouring rice over the glue. Pour enough to make a thick coat. Dump the excess rice and BAM you have a feathered friend.
Comments: I did the activity with my 3 and 4 year olds and they loved using the rice to make a animal. A lot
of them only thought of rice as a delicious meal item.
