They do it mostly because its terminology they are used too... and probably also to hide the fact that I am a muslim convert from other people.

I can live with it, but how would you feel about it?

I know its more or less just a matter of wording, was just curious how others felt about it.

And you know, seems the only people who have a problem with it are hateful wannabe christians(judging from responses so far)

The_water_girl_82 mosque comes from the spanish word for masjid. Being "mezquita"

I got used to saying it, and even the imam uses it.

dont know if its true but i heard that the word mosque is short for mosquitoes.

apparently the crusaders came up with the name because they called the muslims "mosquitoes" and the mosque was a place where the "mosquitoes" would be at....so i dont know how that word would be any better.

but to answer your q: my brother in-law is also a convert and his parents are so worried about how people will treat him that they dont want anyone to know. they buy him halal (kosher) meat but still call him a vegetarian.

they use christian words when referring to our religion but it doesnt bother us.

... yea did some research on the mosquito thing and cant find anything to substantiate it

Short Answer:

Temple - place a god lives
Mosque - a place of worship, specifically via kneeling in prayer
Church - a place of public religious service
Synagogue - a prayer hall and study hall.
Sangha - an assembly regardless of building.

There are some big technical differences, but I don't think most people put enough thought into them to care. If it bothers you and you feel it's done offensively, speak up! If it doesn't, well, I'd remember that people are slow often, and will judge an entire faith on one persons actions. I'd tend personally to just be kind and only speak up when my the discussion will help enlighten the other person.

i'm not offened cause it is a prayin ground so to a different religion i could be classed as a church, but un like most religions there is no sunday school there and all that other stuff, most people do the bible studies after school ours at these different classes, I'm not too sure if the elders would be offened with the mosque being called a church, to them a mosque is a mosque

In the sense that we are all creatures of habit, at first "glance", I would say your parents just forget to use the correct terminology. But, since you say your parents try to hide your conversion from others, I think their continued little mistake is carefully planned.

If you can live with it, that's cool. But your parents don't seem to be living with it, which would bother me if I found myself in a situation like yours. My feeling is that while your parents don't have to agree with your faith, they SHOULD respect your choice. I believe that includes refering to your place of worship by the correct name AND not trying to hide your conversion.

By the way, I'm Christian, and I have no problem with your post.

Congratulations!

my family does the same thing...i'm also a convert (and they know about it too- it's just familiar terminology. lol). it doesn't bother me too much. like you said, i can live with it, but i agree it's still a little strange because it's not a church (church is to worship Jesus and God, mosque is to worship God only). i think it's ok though. :)

As far as hiding it is concerned, i think honesty is always the best solution unless of course you have a strong reason not to tell them. Actually my grandparents don't know about my conversion (one's a religious catholic, one is anti-religion in general, and one doesn't care one way or the other about spirituality)...so i guess i'll have to let them know slowly even though they won't be happy...until then it'll be a secret...

I am not muslim, but with the way people misjudge muslims today, I understand why the subject of you being one would be minimilised by your parents. never be ashamed of who you are, be proud!but have sympthy for your parents, and bear with them... they are probably just trying to avoid judgemental, and ignorant people. As long as they support your choice, don't sweat the little stuff.

I don't know how wrong it is per se; I think that's between you and Allah.

But it is incorrect. Christians have a church, Jews go to a synagogue and Mormons to a temple. I feel it is wrong, however, to deny one's faith, no matter what it is.

Yes, it is wrong, next thing you'll be called an islamic fascist. Stand up against racism, religious intolerance, and cultural cruelty now before you become a victim of your own family.

You should correct them forcefully every time they call a mosque a church. They are infidels.
