well, I pay taxes to the government and I don't have a religion
so I guess I support the government, though I'm not all that happy with it at the moment

The two are not in conflict, because one has nothing to do with the other.
When dealing with personal and spiritual matters, my faith comes first. When dealing with legal matters, the law comes first (the govt second).
Because they operate in two distinct ('separate') spheres of influence, and are responsible for two different areas of my life, there is no conflict between them.
