"There is one underground river--but there are many wells into that river: an African well, a Taoist well, a Jewish well, a Muslim well, a goddess well, a Christian well, and aboriginal wells."

There are many wells into that river, if the river means "the spiritual realm."

That is, people can "access" the spiritual by many pathways.

But does Matthew Fox go onto say that if that river doesn't empty into the ocean of salvation, then the journeyer's path has been incomplete and futile?

What I'm saying is, while there are many ways to learn some things about God, there is only one way to receive God's mercy and salvation through Christ.

Regarding K9's response, the underground river might also be a metaphor for the unseen gift of life.

I think this quote is quite beautiful. There are many roads to spirituality and enlightenment. I believe we choose based on what literally "sings to our soul."

Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat.
Mat 7:14 How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!
Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Fox is clearly a false prophet. Don't believe anything he writes.

My 3 yr old kid probably has more wisdom than him. At Sunday school they sing this:

There's a river of life flowing out of me,
Makes the lame to walk and the blind to see.
Open prison door sets the captive free,
There's a river of life flowing out of me.

Spring up oh well...Within my soul!
Spring up oh well...And make me whole.
Spring up oh well....And give to me.
That life abundantly.

There's a fountain flowing from the Savior's side,
All my sin's forgiven in the precious tide;
Jesus paid the price when for me He died,
There's a fountain flowing from the Savior's side.

There's a risen Savior at the Father's throne,
Ever interceding for His very own;
Pouring down the blessings that are His alone,
There's a risen Savior at the Father's throne.

When your best friend wants to put you on an island and only use your seed, I can see where he is trying to get her to like him, He could stay as a servant of the Wicca lady!
Fox went from RC to Wicca/new age and still makes little impact on the christian world.
Nice try to use the Jacob's well idea.

Juxtapose that statement with one from Jesus...

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

In this, Jesus claims that He is the only way to the eternal. Jesus' statement does not permit one to hold the view that other avenues to God exist. Jesus essentially claimed, come through me or go to hell. He allowed no middle ground. Jesus was one of two things... either he was insane or he was the Son of the Almighty God.

First He is entitled to his opinion,literary art, and a good publisher ( which he did not use). Second the 'Underground 'river was your clue...refers in greater and greater theme of Satan's world!

I think it's a great quote. And when you think about it, it's about God or one major belief that all these other religions come from. Although there are many differences, they all stem from the same source.

I have no idea what Fox was talking about.
I read his BOOK OF MARTYRS.

Is that part of the intro. per chance?
