The lesson plans were much different then. You had Readers, First Reader, Second Reader, etc. Children would be given say 30 min to an hour to memorize the words and then would be called to the front of the class to recite. Sometimes there was only one child studying from a particular book at a time.

Teachers also had different system of teaching certificates, 1st Class, 2nd Class or 3rd Class. The class certificate you got determined what size school and what subjects you would be allowed to teach.

This is a most intresting challenge for a teacher. Some things which are not curriculum can be addressed to everybody. The next step is to organize the class into grade levels, set up the carriculum for each grade and then organize you time on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to be sure everybody get enough lecture, test and personal time. Senior students can be enlisted to help thier more junior class mates if necessary. This is a wonderful calling and opportunity to use your training.

They did there best, but most one room school houses were in rural areas, I know of two near me that were converted into houses. The curriculum was not like it is today, but in some ways I think it may have been harder. I recently seen an email on what students need to learn at various grades. Plus I think these schools went only to the eight grade, but it was enough for them to be successful business people and farmers. Plus when the harvest was on, almost no one went to school. My mother spent at least her beginning years in a one room school house and she did just fine and enjoys reading to this day. Thanks for asking the question, I will bring it up with her.

they didn't. They tried to teach what every kid should know before they had to go out iun the world. Reading, writing, and arethmatic. I guess sometimes they might have paired off but that would have been next to impossible to do all the time, School was much different back in the day.

I don't know but I'll bet my last penny that it was sufficient for that era. People in the future will probably ask something about our way of teaching that will no doubt seem prehistoric to their way.
