Usually the great toe is affected, or the ankle may be affected by gout. It swells and becomes very painful. Earlier it had been given the name- "King's Disease", as it was seen only to affect the Kings since many of them consumed heavy quantities of meat and alcohol.
Swelling over the top of the foot is unlikely to be as a result of Gout. Maybe it is because of injury, infection, other types of arthritis, hypothroidism, or any of the causes of oedema- anaemia, liver/kidney/heart failure.

Gout is a condition where uric acid crystals build up in the body.
This can happen in the area of the big toe and cause a lot of pain.
Our foods contain purines; some foods are higher in this than others.
The doctor may place you on a lower purine diet (of which they will usually provide you a list of foods to avoid. There is also medications that can lower the uric acid in the blood
Here an alternative way to cure gout?

yes, it can - there is also a 'fake' gout - it is a syndrome that mimics the symptoms of gout but is not really gout - my husband has it and it causes significant swelling of the foot and ankle area.

The complication of chronic gouty arthritis is kidney failure. Swelling of the foot (pedal edema) indicates that the kidney is affected. Consult a nehrologist. Pease note that I am not a medical professional.
Please see the webpages for more details and images on Gout.

yes!
trust me!
it can make your whole foot swell so you can't even put on your socks or shoes!
VERY PAINFUL!
the only way to have it not happen is to cut down on drinking and rich foods that contain high amount of uric acid...alcohol causes gout by not allowing uric acid to leave your body...ever drink and you pee is clear?
the uric acid then crystalizes in your joints

It sounds like you have "gout" it is from eating too much fatty foods, too much oils(any type of grease) and salt. Most of the time it can be fixed by regulating your diet and eating healthier, but sometimes it is so bad that you need medication as well as a balanced diet.
