Me and my wife ate at P.F. Changs china bistro last night. I ordered a draft sapporo looking to expand my beer horizons. However, it tasted a lot like a bud light. I don't drink a lot and I am not fimiliar with most foreign beers. Did the waiter bring me a bud light and charge me for an import? Or do these two beers taste similar?

Like Budweiser, most major Japanese brewers use some rice in their mix - this tends to provide a drier, crisper flavor which is preferred by Japanese. All of the above are essentially "pilsener" style beers made with bottom-fermenting yeast, and are pasteurized, and through the course of history have had their flavors somewhat converge to a single standard (historically the individual beers had great flavor variety). So in my opinion it is not impossible to confuse the taste of Sapporo with Bud.

That's not to say they are the same. Personally I prefer Kirin.

Footnote 1: Sapporo is trying to buy Sleeman - a merger between the parent (Sapporo Holdings) and Sleeman does not appear to be on the table.

Footnote 2: Sapporo is definitely available on tap, at least in Japan!

Footnote 3: Kirin and Bud have a tie-up to distribute each other's beers in their countries.

Footnote 4: Sapporo Black Label has 5% alcohol which is approximately the same (or a little less) than the acl content of Bud and Bud Light.

Sapporo is a japanese version of the light American lager (like Budweiser). I think Sapporo is a little crisper than Bud and the better of the two beers.

I personally don't like the taste of Sapporo compared to the other Japanese beers like Kirin and Asahi. It is quite heavy and in that respect, it does taste like a Bud. I would recommend Kirin next time if you're looking for something different.

All major Japanese lager brands are light bodied and not heavily hopped or flavoured but they are more so than Bud Light! So, indeed, maybe you got screwed.

By the way, Sapporo just merged with Sleeman breweries.

I didn't think Sapporo came on tap and I've been in the business for 28 years sorry.

I don't think they taste alike at all; Sapporo has a delicate flavor, but not like Bud lite.

They taste nothing alike. You can find sapporo in any asian grocery stores. It has a much full body taste and is not watered down.

Sapporo only comes in the bottle.

Sapporo is nothing like bud light. It actually tastes like beer and probably has about twice the alcohol content.
