It takes a good minute to peel a shrimp or king prawn by hand but when you buy small peeled prawns there are hundreds of them. Do they get peeled by hand or by machine?

They use both hand and machine, the head is removed by hand and the tip of the tail, then a water jet used to force the body out of the shell, good workers can do 1 every 3 seconds or better.

Cut the prawn down the back and remove the black line; pop into boiling, salted water for a minute if you just want to peel them and add to a dish that requires them to be cooked for a bit more; if not, leave them in the boiling water for about 3 minutes tops! Don't over cook! Tiny shrimp shells are removed by a specially made rubbing machine...

It has to be some sort of machine, surely otherwise they would cost SO much, but it doesn't take a minute to peel but they do take a good 20 seconds or so each, maybe less when you are doing it all day, but even so, am I waffling?

They get taken up to the tower in a crate, wood will do, then you tie them to the biggest bell with blue ribbon.

Then you go downstairs ond pull on the biggest rope.

You're hear a ringing noise above you...There...your prawns are peeled.

Most of them are peeled by poor people.
I prefer to buy them fresh and peel them meself cos the peeled ones usually taste like cr#p after they've sat around waiting to be handled then frozen n whatever.
