Looking back at the way we used to view smoking - I have to laugh..

Forrest Gump - the doctor is fitting Forrest with leg braces while a cigarette dangles from his lip.

An old movie George Segal I think - takes up jogging, but refuses to quit smoking - one scene he's jogging while smoking.

People who take pictures of their sleeping babies by placing a cigarette between their lips. - seen it.

Every cub scout project in the 1970's "We're making an ashtray" - did it.

Children whose parents would dress them as a box of Marlboro for a childs halloween party - seen it.

People smoking in church - seen it.

Any other smoking anachronisms you know of?

I was working in a hospital cafeteria. The doctors would come through the line smoking and try ro give you an order without taking the cigarette out of their mouth. Ashes falling everywhere.

What's your question? Smoking is self-medication for manic-depressives, and without that chemical, which behaves alternately as a stimulant and with calming effects I would have a nervous breakdown within a few days. I feel unless society plans to pay for me to see a psych and get me on some lithium from the public pockets, that people who don't like the smell of smoke should look around this world in which we live and then shut up. But that's just what I would do, since I tend to be accomodating.

It's unreal how far the smoking ban has gone. I accept most of them...technically I have to accept ALL of them. Can't smoke anywhere. What I hate is that non-smokers feel that it is compleatly fine to give you dirty looks, cough loudly, or just come out and tell you that you are gross for smoking. My friends and I can't smoke in bars or restraunts and then get harassed for smoking outside too. I was yelled at the other day for smoking in MY car from the lady in the car next to me because it was wafting in her open window! What ever happened to common decency?!?!

I think not being allowed to smoke outside in the city is BS.

I mean smokers DO consider others when they light up. I have never seen someone blow smoke next to a baby.. Smokers are people too.

dont forget
the mom-in-the kitchen, smoking while cooking dinner, and everyone used to give out real cigars at the birth of a baby.
Most of the ones given now are gum, or candy cigars where i live.

Sailors used to be able to smoke in ships. Now they have to be out on the top deck and only in prescribed areas.
