I believe it is a government mandating regulation which also controls regulation for the schools in the US.
I live in Arizona, and they have been removed. However, as a parent and health care worker, I think candy should also be removed, and it has not.
I have a teen without a weight problem. Her daily lunch consisted of a coke and candy bar. My other teen has a weight problem. It would not be a good lunch for her.
I think part of the reason this has occurred, is the high rate of obesity which is about 80%. I think half of that number have health problems related to eating habits and life style. I think the insurance companies are dropping in the red in paying for patients' bad choices.
Think of it this way, save the pop for relaxation after school, a treat. That way it won't bother too much about the change.
Hope this helps.

Just where you're from, although more and more schools are removing pop machines.
This is a great time to get student council to get purified water (those 10 gallon jugs and water coolers) in the schools. That's what the kids at the school I teach at did. We're vending machine free, and it's so much better than before.

Most areas are headed in that direction. It's ludicrous for schools to teach health and then promote the sales of things that are harmful. Schools also have a moral obligation to protect children--even from themselves.

No. Most schools do not offer soft drinks to students any longer. They are not nutritious and contribute to childhood obesity, which is alarmingly on the rise.

Not all schools, but most have removed soda. They (administrators) are attempting to curb juvenile obesity and the soaring rate of juvenile onset diabetes,,

I believe the US Government has passed a bill to take them out of all schools, and not just your school.

I think they're trying to do it everywhere! Which rocks, but some high schoolers need a boost every once in a while.
