I am relocating to Oahu from the UK in order to marry my fiance, who has lived there most of his life. My 2 teenage children are also moving with us. As money will be a little tight for a year or two we are considering buying a property in Waianae. Do you think my english children will be ok living in this area?

Moving anywhere can be scary and even more so when it's to a different country, but you seem to have a pretty good family together so you all should be great.

Since your fiance is a "local" boy, he has probably told you all sorts of stories of island living. He can also help with a lot of adjustments, too. You and your children have a terrific advantage there - your soon-to-be-husband can introduce the 3 of you to island life, the culture, and the people. Your fiance can especially be helpful in helping your kids adjust - especially to the local "pidgin" english. It might sound funny, but there is a "Pidgin Dictionary" that you just might want to get for the kids. It's almost like a comic book but it does use the local "pidgin"! It might be good for you, after you settle in, to invite the cousins or neighbors for a backyard BBQ - if anything can bring local neighbors together, it's food!

I was the reverse - I grew up in Hawaii and went to college on the "mainland". I had to concentrate speaking proper English for a whole month before I could get used to it - you wouldn't believe the looks I got when I slipped and said, "Let's go Grind!".

I think I might rent for about a year in Waianae before buying property there. I live on Molokai, which has a similar demographic, though more rural. I know some of the kids in Waianae because they used to live on Molokai. The haole kids usually have a tough time of it here. As a haole working in the schools, I have a tough time of it here, but I'm an adult, and I can handle it.

Also, I'd want to wait and see about the direction of the real estate market. Housing prices may be very near a peak.

One last thought, you might want to visit the local schools for a few hours before you enroll or sign a lease.

Malama pono!

i lived in Hawaii for a few years and had a great time. One of the things that made it so enjoyable was that I got to know a lot of Hawaiians. Being friends with a lot of locals made my life much easier. I was able to attend some fantastic luaus, met some wonderful people and had a great experience... Having a fiance who has lived there for most his life will make it easy for you...

I think the children will do just fine! It seems as if the older the children (especially teens), if they like surfing, they should be fine! Children adjust faster than we adults do!
I wish I was moving to Oahu! I love it there, and so do my husband and our son!
Don't fret and worry just "hang loose"!! And put a smile on your face!!

you could attempt following your targets yet you will finally end up like maximum mainlanders, omit the mainland and your loved ones and pass back. this is almost impossible for a guy to get a activity in shape out right here. maximum citizens combat for jobs and that they do unlike others from off-island coming near, taking jobs, and leaving after a twelve months. this is tough to stay right here yet I want you the main suitable.

You'll have to talk to them about how to handle racism & teasing & walk away. Do they know Martial Arts? Just walk away. There are many nice people there but there are some ignorant kids everywhere that will want to tease & hassle foreiners, so just talk to them & build their character, they'll be fine. Teach them to earn respect by their actions .
