Is 40 Ruby? Buy some campaign glasses or something crystal. My parents just have their Silver wedding they invited the neighbours over for a BBQ bring your own stuff they just wanted to celebrate and the weather had been good they never expected any gifts. my mum was happy with the crystal wine glasses and bottle of red from number 6 and a lily for the garden from number 10

Well, 40 might be the ruby anniversary, but I'd leave buying rubies to them. As a casual friend, I doubt they expect you to spend a fortune on them. I would suggest something less extravagant, but meaningful.

It's easy to find newspapers, videos, etc. of the day, week, month or year someone is born. Surely you could get something like that for them. Or, as others have suggested, flowers or a plant of some sort--always appropriate. A picture frame, possibly engraved, can't miss. A nice trinket for the house, possibly?

Two things: first flowers, go to one of the better supermarkets and get "cut" flowers, perhaps 2-3 bunches.
Next, get a small silver item that goes with the flowers, usually found in Greek bakeries (no, I don't know why) and attach it to the flowers with a card, that does not have printing inside, and write a personal note. Something like: "I have always admired both of you, you're a credit to the community."

I'll bet they have accumulated a lot of trinkets and such in 40 years. Why not get them a gift certificate to go out to dinner? Or tickets to some kind of show? Have fun at the party.

40th is Ruby, a nice picture frame never goes amiss as a present, sure they will have some special photographs of the event and it would be nice for them to have a frame to show one off, you can buy some nice ones fairly cheap too.

I think 40 is Ruby. Perhaps you could buy a flower/houseplant with "Ruby" in the name ?
