After getting a K-1, you need to actually come to the U.S. and get married to get a green card. After marriage, you can apply for a green card but processing times vary from state to state - it can take less than a year or even a couple of years to get one. And once you get one, it's usually a temporary green card. After 2 years into the marriage, you have to petition to get the temporary status removed.

The K-1 visa holder must marry the US citizen within 90-days of entry into the US. The foreign national is then eligible to file his/her application for adjustment of status ("green card"). Based on my current experience, USCIS is taking 4-6 months to call couples in for appointments. If the interview goes well, the "green card" is approved and should come in the mail within 3-6 weeks. The 4-6 month scenario can change depending on place and if USCIS is backlogged. Last year the process took a year and longer. This year USCIS has been working quickly to process family based adjustment cases (i.e. thru marriage etc.). If the foreign national has been married for less than two years, he/she will be issued conditional permanent residency. Conditions of the permanent residency must be "removed" 90-days before the 2-year conditional residency validity dates come to an end. At that point, the foreign national becomes a 10-year permanent resident card holder.

You must be married before the ninety day term is up. At that time, she can apply for a work visa, which will take another three months. After you have been married, the green card application is automatically entered and can take six months to a year before it is available, depending on your situation.
One way to smooth the process is to tie your money together as much as possible...joint checking and savings, a mortgage together, etc. If there is a great difference is your ages, it may prove difficult indeed and you may need an immigration attorney. If Homeland Security even hints of a slight problem, I would get an attorney right away, if I were you.
