Well lets see, first hand smoking of course is the smoke inhaled by the person actually smoking the cigerette. Second hand smoke is the smoke inhaled by the person nearby the firsthand smoker. It is a pretty bad situation. However people must not forget that lung cancer can be cause by other factors too. For instance, my uncle passed away from lung cancer back in 1983 and he never smoked a day in his life, nor did anyone in his family. He lived in a small town but he lived next to some factory and WE think that that is what caused it. I think cancer creeps up on people. There was research at one point that said that some people are destined to have some form of cancer (that sucks bad). Don't get me wrong, smoking is not cool and can increase the chances of getting lung cancer or mouth cancer or throat cancer but just because you don't smoke, or don't hang around anyone that does smoke that your chances are ZERO for getting cancer, its just majorly reduced but not depleted. Just be aware.

First hand smoke is the person who is smoking (and inhaling) the tobacco cigarettes. Second hand smoke is the person, in the presence of a smoker, who is inhaling the smoke. Example.. you're in a place (like a restaurant or bar or someone's house) with people who are smoking and you're the non smoker. The smokers are the first hand smokers and you are the second hand "smoker".
the gov't is doing a pretty good job preventing this problem from increasing by making cigarettes more expensive and illegal to smoke at public places- well, where i'm from at least.
the best way to keep this problem from getting out of hand again is through education. spread the word about the dangers of tobacco. did you know that chewing tobacco also causes cancer? it can cause throat and mouth cancer. and did you know that second hand smokers are more at risk for the effects of smoking than the first hand smokers? no fair, i know!

First hand smoke is actually smoking while second hand is breathing in the air exhaled from a smoker. The solution is for people who smoke to stay in their homes where they can polute that air but nothing else.
But everyone has a right to free expression. I sure don't want what happened in CA to happen in my state, where bar cannot allow smoking. I think it is the decision of the business owner if there is smoking or not. Put up a sign and say "this is a smoking establishment" so those who do not want to be around smoke don't have to use the business. And make all restaurants none smoking like CA and WA. But in adult only areas like bars and gaming establishments, if you dont like smoke dont go in!!

First hand smoke is the smoke people exhale directly from smoking tobacco, second hand smoke is the smoke we inhale from what they have smoked. Stopping smoking in any public place is a good start. Getting smokers to quit is even better for all of us.

These answers are just stating the obvious re: the physical difference but what's the chemical difference? Rarified smoke (unconfined smoke) has a higher bonding potential (as measured by it's Zeta Potential) and it carries lots more toxins than first hand smoke as enumerated in the link I'm providing. A qualified physiologist should really spell things out in clear language - I'm not seeing it online - the chemical distinction between the two.
And why do 2nd hand tendrils seek out nearby noses? It's about electro-statics is my guess. It's a complex, evil soup of chemicals and physio-chemical behaviour from all perspectives..

Yes, you absolutely can get addicted to cigarettes through second hand smoke; either through the actual product that is in the cigarette itself, or from the act of someone you respect or care for smoking around you.

First hand is inhaled by the smoker, second hand is smoke the innocent bystanders are forced to breath in. Raise the price of cigarettes to as high as it can get to sway people from buying it so often, and the people who get lung cancer should continue to sue the tobacco companies to pay for their pain and suffering of lung cancer and emphysema

THE FIRST IS WHEN THE PERSON SMOKING INHALES THEIR SMOKE THROUGH A FILTERED CIGARETTE, SECOND HAND IS WHEN POOR CHILDREN OR ANY VICTIM STANDING BY OR JUST IN THE AREA OF A SMOKER BREATHES OUT THERE SMOKE (EXHALE) THAT'S THE GUNK THAT'S UNFILTERED THAT AFFECTS EVERYONE AROUND THEM. IT'S ALL VERY DANGEROUS.
