What role does the umbilical cord play and what must happen for either of the two to occur?
I'm looking for knowledgeable/medical answers only please.

When you are a baby they cut your umbilical cord and it can heal a number of ways, thus inny or outy....also it is common for babies to get hernias from crying too much and that can cause the belly button region to get a hernia, also causing an outy belly button...

OK, after you're born, the doctor cuts the umbilical cord and puts a clamp on it that your mom has to clean with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol 3 times a day until the dead part comes off. How it comes off is what determines whether you'll have an inny or an outy. Also, it settles itself down over the first couple years of your life, might go in a little, might not.

It is what was attached to your mother so you could eat while in the womb. Having an inny or outy depends on how they cut it.

Some kids get hernias, some dont. Sometimes they dont go away, by the time the kid is 2, they will remove the fluid if you request it.
