Absolutely... I have no problem with helping those who are having trouble learning the language with things like bi-lingual test takers for driving tests for example. But if you want to be a citizen here you should be required to make an honest effort to learn the language just as I would expect to do if I moved into a non-English speaking country and wanted citizenship.

I think that english is and should remain the national language becuase it is not fair that just because their is a huge number of latinos in this country, we should have two national languages. It is important becuase this is a nation of immigrants and ever since this nation has existed the language has been english. If we were suppose to have national languages then we should have our constitution in english AND in spanish to begin with. WE SHOULD ONLY HAVE ONE NATIONAL LANGUAGE and that is ENGLISH!

I'm just back in Italy from South California, where english language in shops, clinics, restaurant menus, comes after spanish.
I find it very weird, but I'm sorry to say that's your own (americans) fault. (se habla espanol sign is everywhere)
Even the super tolerant Holland is planning a new law that will allow immingrants only if they speak and write dutch.
I am with you: if you want to live and work in another country you MUST learn the language. (how I'm doing with my english? *wink*)
On this matter the french are the best: they even translate byte as octect, program as logiciel and hard disk as disc dur....

Absolutely, it's kind of part of the price of admittance, if you're going to be in our country, go ahead and learn the language, and don't have an attitude about it...nobody expects perfection in a week, but a good-faith effort is all that's asked...but if you're not willing to do that, then go on home instead, 'cause it's not gonna work out...

Official language, yes.
It has to happen really soon though because unfortunately, many other languages are soon becoming contenders for the national language (Spanish, Chinese).

Yes it should. It is now the 'accepted' language, but we need to go a bit further with this.
I am presuming that you are talking about the U.S.
