You could try to repudiate this quote. That would be more fun, though some teachers and professors really hate that.

You could discuss the social changes that wars cause, i.e. introduction of women to manufacturing jobs in the US during World War I and II. The ending of slavery and the 13th through 15th Amendments after the Civil War. The exchange of ideas and exposure to alien cultures that soldiers experience while serving in the army, i.e. Crusaders brought back taste for Oriental goods and spices that inspired the European exploration period after the Renaissance.

Technological advances in building, transportation, production and medicine brought about by warfare. The construction of roads, ports and fortifications which try new building materials and methods. Aircraft and rocketry advances of the two World Wars and the Cold War. Building of Liberty ships and mass production of war material that inspires changes in the organization of large corporations. Use of medevac helicopters in Korea and especially Vietnam, treating of shock due to trama, studying group hygiene and its effectiveness for preventing epidemic disease. Nuclear power and weaponry.

This truth might be more obvious if one was considering the question from a war-torn country. Everything we achieve in a peaceful life is protected by some sort of defence, whether living in the protection of a tribe or an army - we live protected lives. If we step outside of the bubble we find survivors, refugees, soldiers, empty universities, poorly-maintained infrastructures, and no hope. Social progress has been replaced with concerted hatred and eternal grudge-bearing. Perhaps the ghost of progress is resistance. Here's to the peace we enjoy.

ps a ceasefire isn't enough to give people a settled home life, which is a resuisite of progress.
pps an exception might be a dictatorship, unless you count the dictator's personal peace - which beggs the question: who's peace: who is benefiting from the progress?

If there is no peace, it would be very difficult to cooperate with each other. All the chaos would be one big hurdle to begin conceptualizing for a certain goal and to start acting on that goal. Peace is a prerequisite to progress because it creates order, which greatly helps a group, or even an individual, progress in any field. Something like that.

Good luck with your essay.

Yes. However, they work hand in hand. In order to have true peace, there must be economic development (I mean power plants, railroads, schools, hospitals, fresh water, etc; not fast-food restaurants); to give the youth a future.
A good starting point of how this has worked in history, is to research the 1648 Peace of Westphalia, which was the treaty agreement which ended the religious wars of Europe, and brought about peaceful development for many nations.

I will presume here that you mean economic and social progress (broad subjects, neh?).

Consider:
Peace facilitates law enforcement, hence peace and order.
Peace and order enables stability.
Stability engenders investor confidence (both domestic and foreign).
Investor confidence means more business.
More business means greater income opportunities due to employment and livelihood opening up.
Improved employment and livelihood means less poverty.
Less poverty means less social discontent.
Less social discontent means greater peace and order.

... and so these all spiral up to developing relative affluence among those in the locality.

I know, rather simplistic and naive at best. But that's the long and short of it. Now, cite concrete examples and you're on your way to a more acceptable essay.

Cheers!

You would probably get more help at a home work help site than here. I'm sure Yahoo has one. But to help you with your question you can begin with (or include?) the fact that you do have to have everyone working together to get anything done. "United we stand, divided we fall" -- Abe Lincon
