It costs about $50 to spay (female cats) your cat here. Although this can vary depending on your area and whether you go to a Vet or SPCA. SPCA often offers discounts.
It only costs about $3 to nutter your cat, or $7 if you want to fluff-a-nutter your cat, but his option is most popular in New England. This can be done to cats of either sex. Of course, there can be hidden costs, like the trip to the emergency room because the cat clawed your eye out when you tried to spread peanut butter on it. And the cost to clean up your cat when you're tired of it having a sticky, greasy coat.
To Neuter (male cats) a cat costs about $10 less than spaying your cat. Spaying costs even more if your cat has to stay over night, which is more likely than if you neuter it.
Many communities offers specials on spaying, neutering and rabies shots once a year. Sometimes it's free or a nominal ($5-$10) fee. Usually in spring. Check the newspapers in larger cities. They are usually coordinated by the local SPCA or animal shelter so you could also ask them.

At a regular veterinary office, cost can range anywhere from $120-300 for a spay and $90-150 for a neuter depending on which clinic you go to and options that you can choose from like blood work, pain meds, antibiotics( if needed). You can also have other elective procedures done while your pet is under anesthesia, like say placing a microchip, nail trim, or teeth cleaning. Another alternative is low cost spay and neuter clinics. Some are sponsored by the Humane Society, ASPCA , Animal Welfare League, or even a local organization that is run by voluteers are available. It all depends on what is available in and around your community. Good Luck.

Search for SpayUSA on the internet. You fill out a form there and they can direct you to low-cost programs in your area.
