My regular telephone is essential. I'm handicapped and not about to fool around wasting time dialing 911 on VOIP (which I have also) or a cellphone. I have a cordless phone too, just for convenience. But if there's a power outage in our area, it's useless. The best, surest connection is still a land line telephone. My cellphone is just to have on me when I'm traveling or for a brief chat.

When my home phone line was damaged due to weather, I was out of phone service for about 3 weeks. I used my cell phone the entire time. Even though I have 4 bars in my house, my calls would drop.
My job pays for my cell, so I don't have that expense. If it were more reliable, I would get rid of the home phone altogether.

It's better for international and business calls. I've got two mobiles, and a phone at my desk and still kept my home phone. Have gone for a dirt cheap tariff and hardly use it though.
Also - Skype (if you were thinking about that as an alternative) phones are not reliable enough for emergency calls.

I think a regular landline sucks. I use VOIP because it it much cheaper than a regular phone. I also use a cellphone only when out.

Depends, sometimes it is connection-wise. It may be cheaper to use the regular phone too.

I got rid of my land line 1 year ago, I was sick and tired of paying all those taxes, now I got VoIP and love it, for only 19.99 a month...I got 2 cellphones too...
