Absolutely, as long as there is no previous stain on the wood. Lightly sand it, then use tack cloth to remove fibers. Apply a good primer. Then paint it with the first coat. Allow to dry a couple of days, then paint a second coat on. Use a satin paint of good quality, and also buy a good brush.
There are really no disadvantages to painting wainscoting, as long as you pick a neutral tone, that you won't get sick of soon. And if you have small children, they may nick it up.

RE:
Can you paint wainscoting?
And if so, what should you do to prepare it? What is the best kind of paint to use? And are there any disadvantages to painting wainscoting?

Wainscoating is made in many different grades. YOu can paint most of it easily.
I would sugguest if it is the kind that comes in a panelling where there is lamination go with a primer first. Talk to the paint store guy about it.
If it is wood go with whatever grade of paint is on it or a higher sheen. I suggest semigloss. It cleans well and works well on wood.

sand it.
prime it.
paint it.
If it's indoors use interior paint. If it's in a kitchen or bathroom use a semi gloss or high gloss. If it's outdoors use exterior paint. A satin is good for outdoor use...lets a little light reflect off whatever you're painting and makes it not look drab. Flat paints tend to make things look basic and drab. No disadvantages as far as I can see.

Yes, depending upon the existing finish of the wain. If there is a slick finish to it, you must lightly sand it with sandpaper, then apply a coat of a good primer, like Killz or Zinser. Now, your ready to paint...enjoy and have a nice day.
