Will your hair grow back? Of friggin' course. Cut it off, and brush that cat more often... like every day.

I have a long hair cat that gets tangles. There are a few things that I do to help reduce the tangles, and to remove tangles when he gets one. The cats that get tangles have a top and undercoat. The undercoat is the fur that gets tangled. It is the more cotton-like fur.
First, try to bathe your cat with baby magic shampoo. I bathe my cat between 2-4 times a year. This helps get the undercoat to shed out. The undercoat is totally replaced 2 times a year even if the cat is kept completely indoors. (summer, winter) While bathing some of the tangles just come out.
Next, get a few different brushes. The regular cat brushes work well to get the top coat looking nice, but they can't really straighten the undercoat. I use a flea comb in short little swipes to get the loose hair out, and straighten the remaining undercoat. When a tangle develops use the flea comb to try and get the tangle out, or at least to minimize the size of the tangle. I only cut the fur out when the tangle is really bad. The fur grows back, but try to minimize the amount of top coat fur in the tangle before cutting, this will make the part that you cut out less noticeable. If you only cut the undercoat you won't even be able to see that there is fur missing.

Use a better comb (they have de-matting combs with blades on them, specifically for tough mats!) and get the tangles out. If her hair is getting too poofy, rub her down with a dryer sheet once a week (unscented please, no need for kitty to smell floral fresh, and she will HATE IT!). If you do decide to cut all of her hair off, please take her to have it done professionally. It's been my experience that cats do NOT like to hold still for this experience and they will have special equipment to restrain her to prevent injury to both her and you and make it a less traumatic experience for all involved. Ever given her a bath? Times that agony by 100! And add blades. Perfect. Cats are strangely attached to their hair.
When it does grow back, please get in the habit of grooming her every day. It will prevent the matts from getting too big. Invest in better combs and get her in the habit of getting brushed. She will get used to it, and maybe even start to enjoy some of it. Good luck!

It's okay to cut the cat's hair because it will grow back. As it grows back you might want to give it a brush over once or twice a day to prevent the same situation from occurring again.

Yes it's hair will grow back! I started giving my cat baths while he was very young, so he would get used to it. He's not the biggest fan, but he let's me because he knows he's going to get a couple of spoons of turkey baby food (it's a trainer trick). If you shave your cat that will get rid of the problem now, but when the hair grows back you need to brush daily. They have spray on danglers for animals so that should help if their are any knots. Long haired cats have to be groomed like a poodle would. They may look pretty, but they are high maintenance. Your cat may clean itself, but it's up to you to keep it looking pretty.

Just cut out the matted parts. A long hair cat needs to be groomed every day.

Well these knots are called "mats". You can get a cat brush and brush it out smoothly. You should brush your long haired cat regularly to avoid these problems...once a week is good.
