good question - and rather brave of you ask it, if I may say so! My answer to you is that the job description of a police officer is so wide, then the police must be made up of all sorts of people. It is not, in my opinion, a male female issue. I have seen some women better at riot policing than some men. This is not the norm however. I have equally seen some men better at calming situations and connecting with people than some women. This is also not the norm. Individuals are all different and they all bring something different to the job.
Physical strength is undoubtedly a big part of the fundamental type of policing (which is what I think you mean by keeping our streets safe) but thinking on your feet and connecting with the individuals you deal with is invaluable. Everyone who does the job takes their strengths and weaknesses with them and must adapt their responses accordingly.
In all honesty, you could manage with a police force (service??!) fully staffed with men, but it just wouldnt work in my experience with only women. So, in actual fact my answer, unpopular tho it is going to be, is yes, women can do the job as long as there are plenty of men there too.......

Primarily, our Police are here to protect, yes.. you're correct.... BUT A very smart officer once told me, "Law enforcement is 99% little Debbie lost her bicycle and 1% chaos." Meaning, most of the time police are helping people. Women and Men can BOTH do that.... Infact, when it comes to that 1% chaos, the only disadvantage a woman has is her size. No, she couldn't over power a 250lb man, but that's why there's back up (me, I'd just mace them:-) The ADVANTAGE a female officer has is her sensitivity and ability to rationalize. You put a guy up againt an angry drunk, he's going to have that alpha male ego kick in and become combative, a female can calm the guy down most of the time and get him to comply. Now, I know enough great male police officers, I'm not talking them down, I'm just saying that yes.... women are perfectly apt for law enforcement too.

The number of women police officers is on the rise in the majority of US states. And the women are able to do it just as well if not in some cases better. But it's not the police who we should look to, for the Primary safety of ourselves and our family. Instead we should make ourself the primary and the police the secondary. The police can't be everywhere at one time so everyone should make it their responsibility to protect themselves and not whine when they become the victim of a crime because the police weren't there when it happened.

Female police officers are trained in basic self defence, the only one i have know personally could take on any guy with a few simple moves
She once had a boyfriend turn on her with a hunting knife (somthing that would freak most females I know out) she disarmed him without raising a sweat, calmly called the local police etc.
Its sexist to assume that women cant defend themselves as well as men, plenty of men are killed at the hands of serial killers etc.
Also women cops dotn have the macho thing going on, so dont seem to feel the need to prove themselves.

On average, men are bigger and stronger than women - that's science. However, WPCs are, as part of the job, in great shape and more than a match for beer-bellied, Stella swilling drunks on the street - so the answer is a pretty solid yes.
*If* you get rid of a lot of the sexist, old-fashioned regulations vis-a-vis which gender can deal with which gender and the like (for searching and other such matters) then yes, women law enforcers can easily keep the streets safe.

Yes, it is a job that women can do. Whilst it is a fact that generally men are physically stronger than women, women are less aggressive and can, on many occasions, calm a situation that might otherwise end in more violence.
We all have different things to offer to society and I do not feel that aggressivness from cops of either sex is helpful unless it is absolutely necessary.

Coming from a guy in the police academy.
Yes. Women can very the job well. They may escalate their use of force in order to do their job though.
For example: If it were me vs. another guy I would get in a struggle and win. But if you are a little girl police officer then at first signs you are losing you may be justified in shooting him. Remember if the female officer goes unconscious then her weapon is available and that is unacceptable. She may have to use more force.

My girlfriend has just joined the police force, and every night she comes home and tell me how good the training is. Its not just a mans job, and Im sure there are aspects where men will excel and aspects where women will excel.

Yes.
But not all women, and not all men, can do the job.
It takes someone that can think on their feet, above average intelligence, and the ability to compensate technique for brawn.
We are not paid to fight or throw our weight around. We are paid to keep the peace. If you want to fight, we will subdue you with the minimum force necessary. If you have to go to the hospital before going to jail, then hey, maybe you should just cooperate.
The weapons are not for show. They are for morons that fail to obey lawful commands.
