i have a woman that lives down stairs to me, who constanly bangs on my ceiling with a broom handle plus she has thrown paint at my front door and hit it with a hammer all of this is because she thinks my husband and i make to much noise walking around and she also verbally abuses us as well .
What should i do other than kill her.

Who owns the property she lives in? If it is a housing association, council or private landlord, you need to make sure you complain to them and give them any evidence you have of her behaviour.

If she has hit your front door with a hammer, did she cause any damage? Did you SEE her hit the front door with a hammer? Same with the paint episode. If so, the police must take a report of criminal damage from you and investigate accordingly. However, if the damage is unwitnessed, it is unlikely that they will be able to arrest your neighbour just because you BELIEVE it MIGHT be her.

If you can gather enough evidence, there may be a case for harrassment. Some (or maybe all?) councils in the UK have Nuisance Housing Officers. Get in touch with your council and ask them if they can help you - they deal with private and rented/council properties.

You could get in touch with social services/mental health services about your concerns for this womans mental health. I don't know how much they would tell you but they might, if they know of her, visit her to assess her current state of mind.

But remember, if you ARE making too much noise, she can contact the same people that you can.

Good luck with it.

Firstly if you are making a lot of noise intentionally STOP IT....

But if your just walking and she's doing all this THEN....
document everything, call the NON-emergency number for the police the next time she does anything nutty. Even if she just verbally abuses you. Maybe she is unaware that what she is doing is inappropriate.

After you get a little documented evidence against her, MOVE OUT! You are able to break the lease if you are being harassed. I wouldn't be worried about you killing her, what about if she really is a little sick in the head and kills YOU....

If you are being physically threatened by her with a hammer call the police immediately.

Do not antagonise her. Do not retaliate. Collect evidence so record the date and time of every instance that she abuses you. Take photographs/video footage of her doing so. Use it to complain to the mamagement of the flats or local authority.

You could invite her to a discussion with a trained mediator to resolve the dispute.

Have you tried talking to her? Alternatively talk to the buidling's freeholder or property manager, see if they can mediate. Assuming this fails......do you have wooden or laminate floors? It may help sound proof if you throw a few rugs down. Ok, so I'm sure you feel that you shouldn't have to do that, but if you want to shut her up them maybe it's worth it.

In any case, you should have reported her to the police for causing criminal damage to your property. Perhaps you should do that if this carries on....a visit from the police may shut her up!

Keep a diary, recordings anything, there are human rights laws that can be invoked - i.e. Section 5, right to sleep, if she is doing it late at night then you could take the leaseholder to court (seek legal advice from CAB) if you are in flats, that way her lease could be revoked and she is out on her ear. Nice.
Otherwise social services are always a good start, she could be mentally unstable, its not your fault and you should not suffer from it.

Depends on where you live.In England we can call our local council offices to send someone round and leave a diary sheet and monitor to record her noise. Can you video tape her and call the police in next time she kicks off. Meanwhile, invite 50 friends and family round for an all night rave

You could pay me a couple of hundred quid, to go round to your neighbour from hell, and ruff the ***** up abit. Meanwhile find a busy restaurant, so loads of people can give you both a good alibi. I'll make sure she's hospitalised giving you some welcome peace. Believe me by the time i've finished with her, she won't dare to trouble you again.

Speak to the council about her - if she's behaving in an anti-social manner they can write to her and threaten her with prosecution. Start keeping a log of all the things she does.
