Kentucky’s Roman Catholic bishops have weighed in on the national debate over illegal immigration, calling for humane treatment of immigrants and policies that would allow them to gain legal status.
“We respect the right of nations to enforce their borders and to enforce reasonable immigration laws,” said the statement to be formally released Tuesday by the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, the lobbying arm of the state’s four bishops.
“At the same time, we regard every person, illegal immigrant, legal immigrant, or citizen, with the mind of Christ: a human person worthy of dignity and respect."

The statement is being released to coincide with a congressional field hearing on immigration scheduled for Tuesday in Evansville, Ind.
It calls for:
A program allowing illegal immigrants to gain legal status.
A “more rational and humane” system to let foreigners to come here for temporary work assignments.
A reduction in waiting times for reuniting families of immigrants.
A “restoration of due process for immigrants” in response to what it contends are policies by federal officials that include detention without charges and ethnic profiling.
The Hispanic population of Kentucky was 81,783 as of July 2005, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But Ron Crouch of the Kentucky State Data Center estimates the population is at least two to three times larger when undocumented immigrants are factored in.
The bishops said residents need to think not only about “following the rule of law” but also showing “Christian solidarity with those in need.”

Nobody is talking about treating illegal immigrants inhumanely. We're just talking about deporting them and keeping them in their own country (although, for Mexicans that might be interpreted as inhumane treatment) until they can immigrate legally.

I'm sorry you haven't been treated well.
As far as the article goes, Roman Catholics and Christians are not necessarily the same thing. There are some Catholic Christians, but not all are. In the same way, there are some Christian Catholics, but many are not.
I am a Christian, but not Catholic. One of the main differences is - I do not see the Pope as an authority over my faith or as someone wh can connect me to God.
If Catholics require that someone representing the papacy should give a statement before they will treat someone with respect, they have many more problems than I thought.

So, once again, the catholics are wrong, so what? They are wrong most of the time. Illegal aliens are felons. they have no rights except to be arrested, marched to the border and deported with the warning that if they are caught back in this country illegally, they will face 20 years in prison with "Bubba" the rapist. They deserve nothing but that. The Army, National Guard, Marines, and Police should be used to accomplish this, and every citizen should get a $20.00 reward for turning each and every one of these criminals in. Employers who give them jobs should be arrested, sent to prison for a year in hard time prison, fined a million dollars per offense, then upon release, warned that if it happens again, the penalty will be doubled. ZEROTOLERANCE for the illegal felons!

Illegal immigrants are just that......illegal! Anyone breaking the law of the land they are in,has to be punished. Regardless of who they are. Of course this does not mean one has to treat them inhumanely, but illegals MUST expect to be punished in the same way as any other lawbreaker. They are no different from anyone else!Surely they do not expect to be treated differently, do they?? That is not the way to earn/gain respect. The way to do that is to be equal to others, and except when you are in the wrong.!! As for the church, ie,Roman Catholic Priests, they have no business in politics, they should stick to what they know best. Religion is NOT whats involved here. The law is!! YOU need to redress your attitude if you want to be accepted.

First off, only Catholics are bound by Catholic bishops, not all Christians, and second, true Christians would not need such a statement to treat their fellow man with kindness and compassion.

Of course Catholics are defending them, since most south of the border illegals are Catholic. It only can add to the money the church can make off them.

Everyone is worthy of dignity and respect. I don't need a bishop to tell me that. You're not truly a Christian if you need to be reminded how to treat other people.

The Catholics should sell some of their assets, including all the jewelry in the Vatican, and start helping people. The Catholic church is one of the richest organizations in the world..........all tax free.
