I'll put this into two parts, the first the beliefs, the second the effect of these beliefs and the actions it has led too. You can then make up your own mind. I think the second bit is more important but thats me.

1. The fundamental beliefs of scientology:

A. Scientologists’ beliefs differ depending on how long they have been in the church, as the higher levels are considered secret and even dangerous to the initiated or unprepared.

B. Scientologists believe that L Ron Hubbard came up with the only workable technology/practises/teachings to help and unlock mankind’s potential. It is believed that by taking part in scientology auditing and learning all the various ‘tech’ a person will become more capable, becoming firstly a ‘Clear’ and then an ‘OT’. Various spurious claims have been made about the state of a ‘clear’ and ‘OT’ amongst which are immunity to illness, removal of physical ailments, perfect memory, increased IQ, increased health & fitness (and thus longevity), and then moving on to the more strange such as being able to exteriorse at will (out of body experiences) and control of MEST (ability to change matter, energy, space and time at will).

C. Scientologists believe:
- Man has an immortal soul called a thetan.
- You have a primitive reactive mind which is the source of much of man's problems, which collects "engrams" from traumatic times or when you are unconscious.
- A lot of physical illnesses/problems are psychosomatic caused by "Engrams".
- You can 'audit' engrams out and this will solve your issues and clear up your health. They also believe it makes you a more intelligent, aware and reasoned individual.
- Reincarnation and the ability to know these past lives and get to more engrams this way.
- Paying lots of money to scientology for there tech, courses, and auditing.
- Getting more people into scientology so they too can become ‘clear’ and thus save the world…

D. If they have got to OTIII, then the belief changes slightly. Most scientologists are not at this level but for the majority this is thier goal and what they will pay an awful lot of money to achieve, the bridge to total freedom...
- The universe is quadrillions years old.
- Xenu the Intergalactic Space Lord ruled a confederation of overpopulated planets.
- Xenu took a load of these aliens from each planet and brought them to earth.
- They were then exploded in volcanoes 75 million yrs ago.
- Their souls were then caught on ribbons and taken to implant stations, where Xenu brainwashed & confused them so they wouldn't leave the planet. This includes implanting all the world religions.
- These Alien souls called Body Thetans have attached to humans, and are infact the real cause of your problems and why you get and retain engrams...
- You audit these body thetans out by auditing there engrams and taking them back to the Xenu incidents I & II.
- People have jaw aches from when they were a clam in human evolution....hence the name of the main critical site Operation Clambake.

2. The Effects of Scientology:

Well the Church of Scientology is a destructive cult, it has all the signs and has made this very clear by its actions. Here are what some judges have thought of it:

"Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious...It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others."
Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London

"[The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories... and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect.... The organization clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, L.Ron Hubbard."
Judge Breckenridge, Los Angeles Superior Court:

I will address in part what i stated in the first part of this answer.

A. This is known as 'bait and switch', it's where you offer someone something, then when it comes time to deliver you switch what it is you were going to do, and what it was about. This will be looked at in more detail. I believe that an organisation that reckons it has the answer to all man's ills should be freely making this information available, not charging tons of money for it, and outright lying to people about the true purpose and nature of the 'religion'.

B. Ok another large problem. Hubbard lied about all his credentials, indeed his whole life, to make his theories seem like they came from a suitable source, they didn't. He makes the assertion all the time in his books that these have been tested by the scientific method in vigorous detail, and he has personally observed and tested, that this or that was technical fact, blah, blah, blah. He goes on about how it can fix a large variety of ills because he taught they were pyschosamatic in nature. These included arithitis, myopia, leukaemia, asthma, heart problems, and a whole host of other illness, conditions and disabilities, etc, etc. These claims have absolutely no merit whatsoever, and I hope you can see that there are infact dangerous as well. People have avoided seeking out proper medical help, because they believe scientology can cure all, because hubbard told them that. He also actually stole most of the theories from other sources then added his own madness to it, to pervert, condition and control individuals. Here are the relevant links to this part of the question:

Official Documents available on line about Hubbard: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kspaink/cos/LRH-bio/

C. Ok people are entitled to their beliefs, so once they learn the true story of who Hubbard was, and hear the differing reasons as to why he created what he did, if they still want to belief in this stuff, then ok, their choice - that doesn't concern me.

However, there are a lot of worrying practices that in my mind need to stop, or be made very clear to the public before they join.

These include, amongst many other things:
- Not telling people the full story
- Not charging too high prices, nor badgering people to spend more money on courses.
- Removing all claims to being a solution to people's physical ailments, and diseases as this is not only ludricrous but dangerous too.
- Researching and acknowledging that many practices involve trance-like suggestable states, and mind & social control techniques - remove them or make it very clear that is what is happening, no actually just remove them.
- The techniques are pyschotherapy and thus its staff should be trained as such in official medical schools, and then later can carry out these supposed 'religious procedures'.
- They should not tell people that it is science, or that it has been researched, because it hasn't.
- Keeping in-depth files on people's confessions and deepest secrets, then using it as blackmail or as a controlling method.
- Advocating disconnection - splitting up of families.
Fair Game, Dead Agenting, etc - hounding & harassing critics to any length.
- Stopping Narconon and its descredited useless, dangerous techniques. http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Narconon/
- Publish more of its connection with all of its many front groups. http://www.xenu.net/archive/infopack/9.htm
- Stop lying about Hubbard's life.
- Stop any more criminal activities like has been proven in the past if they are still doing such 'operations'. http://www.xenu.net/archive/go/index.htm
- has a heavy handed ethics system which also metes out punishments of hard labour, endurance and no comforts, known as the RPF, then you have the RPF's RPF... http://www.lermanet2.com/scientology/gulags/BrainwashinginScientology'sRehabilitationProjectForce.htm
- restricting access or punishing people for accessing 'entheta', or information the church doesn't want its members to see, like all the critical websites. http://www.clambake.org/archive/events/censorship/

Ok, ill stop now, that's a good start.

D. Hmmm, the Space Opera, well apart from to comment that people have been thoroughly taken over by this point and can no longer critically think about scientology, its beliefs or practices, I think it speaks for itself. No one would believe this stuff without having gone throught the cult indoctrination. This was all explained in South park as well, and as shown in the links in first part of this answer it is accurate and true.

Kenneth Robinson, Former British Minister of Health:
"The government is satisfied that Scientology is socially harmful. It alienates members of families from each other and attributes squalid and disgraceful motives to all who oppose it; its authoritarian principles and practice are a potential menace to the personality and well being of those so deluded as to become followers; above all, its methods can be a serious danger to the health of those who submit to them..."

Sorry rather long and damning but I like to prove and evidence my arguments.

That we all have "engrams" which cause us problems from everything to psychosomatic illness to insanity. According to Dianectics, just about everyone was born to a mother who had been beaten all during her pregancy by their father...causing engrams, When dad beat your mom and said "Take that! Take that!", that's why you grew up to be a theif. Seriously, read the book if you don't believe it.
The way to run out these engrams is by "auditing" which is a mild form of hypnosis. Under hypnosis, people become very suggestable and are prone to have mild hallucinations (like being space aliens in past lives).

Scientology was started by sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, and evolved from his initial concept of Dianetics. The Scientology religion is based exclusively upon L. Ron Hubbard's research, writings and recorded lectures -- all of which constitute the Scriptures of the religion. These encompass more than 500,000 pages of writings, nearly 3,000 recorded lectures and more than 100 films. He is the only source of the religion, and he has no successor. A fundamental doctrine of the Scientology religion is that spiritual freedom can be attained only if the path outlined in these works is followed without deviation, for it is an intensively researched and workable route.

Scientology denies that salvation comes from God. As their website says: “For instance, although, like the Judeo-Christian religions Scientology affirms the existence of a Supreme Being and places the Supreme Being at the apex of its cosmology, like many Eastern religions, salvation in Scientology is attained through personal spiritual enlightenment.” Also from their website: “Scientology holds man to be basically good, and that his spiritual salvation depends upon himself and his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe.”

Scientology, like many new religions or those of eastern descent, releases people from personal accountability. They deny the existence of heaven and hell, and they deny the concepts of original sin and salvations by grace. In Scientology (which espouses reincarnation), each person must save himself by ridding himself of destructive memories and experiences that he or she has brought into their current life.

I have been aproached by a scientology salesman and I have got to say they are absolute nutters. Proper ones. Nutters that you wouldnt have on your property let alone in your life. Just where L.Ron got his idea from is a bloody mystery but do yourself a favour and stay well clear. Serious warning for you there.

Man is an immortal, spiritual being. His experience extends well beyond a single lifetime. His capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized — and those capabilities can be realized. He is able to not only solve his own problems, accomplish his goals and gain lasting happiness, but also achieve new, higher states of awareness and ability.

In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results.

They believe that if one gives one's money to Scientology then they will have become an improved person or a 'clear'. Of course there is some paperwork involved too.

PS: I think you'd better be sitting down when you read it. Maybe your next question on Y!A will be: "How retarded must Travolta, Cruise, etc really be"?
