If I go to a fine dining restaurant, can i wear a cocktail dress?

sure you can wear one there but you should wear a cocktail dress for special events like classy parties and dinners.

Cocktail dresses are somewhat dressy, not necessarily frilly. The term cocktail dress comes for the era when people had cocktail parties...everyone got together and had cocktails and snacks. If you look at pictures of the 40's, 50's and 60's you'll see a lot of them. Watch Lucy reruns, they wear them a lot too. They are usually knee lenght. You can where one to a nice restaurant. I remember my Mom and Grandmothers wearing theirs to events...usually drinks at friends or a nice restaurant. They even had cocktails hats. Some people see them as "little black dresses" today.

Cocktail Dress:

NOT a gown. Always just above or below your knees. But dressy. Yes, it's to wear to semi-formals or to an upscale restaurant or club.

It is something similar to a night gown. Those you wear on grand occasions like prom, ceremonial dinners and official events. You can just put on a nice dress. No sneakers jeans shirts or messy hair
