Some more info would be nice. Are you looking at buying an SLR or a point and shoot ?

If it's the latter. What's important to you, size, features, quality of picture?

I'm gonna assume you want a point and shoot and your main priority is quality - in that case I can highly recommend the Casio EXCILM range. Great build quality, they use the excellent Pentacx lenses, but their software is better. The other bonus of course is that they are sooooo small

okie, lemme help you in that. Go this way:
first decide what's your budget, if thats not a limitation go for "digital SLRs" there you can choose from canon, nikon.
Now, if you have budget as consideration also then answer another question i.e. whether you want ease of use or more manual controls also to satisfy you creative instinct.
So, if you want good results with full automation and least manual intervention required, go for Nikon or Sony.
Or else, go for canon which would give you a lot of manual options also.
Normally the cameras available today are 5MP onwards which is a good enough resolution for all practical purposes. So, don't need to spend your money on higher MPs, unless you want to print hoardings out of your pics.
For the specifications you should look for optical zoom, higher the better (3x is normally available), USB 2.0 for fast data txfr, video support 640x480 at 30fps with sound is great to have, higher shutter speeds (typically 1/2400 is available) anything more than 2400 is an asset.

Check out the Canon Powershot A620. Great quality, inexpensive, great features, 7 megapixels, 4x optical zoon, minimal shutter lag, and a swiveling lcd viewer. What more could you ask for...? (upgrade sd card, and get rechargeable batteries!)

In general, anything by Canon and Kodak is pretty good. A specific recommendation would depend on your budget and additional requirements (how much zoom do you want, do you need advanced features, and so forth).
Perhaps you can add some additional details.

Canon A700 6mp--6x optical zoom--2AA batteries--weighs 8oz. ready to go.Takes outstanding pictures. I got this because I was tired of carrying my 35mm SLR anchor around( 41/2 pounds for camera, bag and 1 28 to 300mm lens). Ain't technology wonderful?
