I think it is what is a reward for living a good life and being a good person. Not worrying about worldly possessions, and such things now will bring you more than you could ever desire for eternity. It is a beacutiful thought. Would steel gates, and streets paved with cement give you something to look forward to?

For one who has any spiritual wisdom, it is understood that the opposite is true. God created all things. To have pearls for gates and streets paved with gold, is to signify that what we esteem of value on earth, has no value at all in heaven. It is all worthless. This is the problem with non believers, they have allowed the Devil to seize their minds. they have no wisdom, knowledge or understanding of spiritual things. They esteem themselves as wise and lean only to their own understanding

I firmly believe in my heart that it is a figure of speech for GOD.
He knows that these precious jems and metals are valuable to humans and this is GOD'S way of showing us that HEAVEN will be a paradise of limitless value. when we arrive in HEAVEN we may not see streets of gold and gates of pearls but something better. something that is so beyond our understanding that the only way that we can get a tiny bit of insight is to compare it to earthly things that we already know like gold and jewels.

I never heard of streets paved with gold- I always pictured some really serene cloudy place, but I guess that could just be his summer home.

In the book of Revelation John said that there are now words on how to describe heaven so he used word and descriptions of stuff that was around in his times.

i wouldnt think that, remember that God created the earth and the universe. so its his gold and pearls, and he can use it where ever he pleases. just like man made cars and computers, why would we say its vain to park a car under our garage and have a computer at home....?

That's what it says in the bible.
Other religious books say other things. Like:
In heaven, you don't need to ask anything. All you need will be before you. As soon as you want something, it will appear before your eyes.
That's just cool!
