I believe it is both! Some people can do all kinds of drugs and just quit with no ill effects. Others must fight a long hard battle. Alcohol is a(to me) mentally addictive drug. I quit by just not drinking. I had no ill affects. Smoking cigarettes was a VERY different story! I had physical AND mental withdrawls. It was the hardest thing I have done. But now I know I have the power to whip anything!

Drug addiction affects a person mentally with sometimes overwhelming obsessive thoughts to use in spite of the results. Physically, once the drug enters the body, with a compulsive desire to continue to use until all ways and means to get more have been exhausted, depending on where one is in the progression of their disease. Early in the progression it can be as simple as doing more than what was planned. it also affects a person spiritually with selfish and self centered behavior. Not using must come first, it is extremly difficult to do alone. Just like everything else in life, it's best to learn from those with experience. Find them and allow them to guide you or your loved one

Both. The physical withdrawal symptoms from going clean will last a few weeks. The mental/psychological side can last a lot longer, tricking your body into thinking it's physical as well. But hey, knowing is half the battle, right? Once you know this, it will become easier to accept.

It depends on the person. Speaking from past experience I needed it more for mental because I wanted to get away from my problems and not think of them. Luckily I was saved.
