I dont have any credit cards to use and am trying to do our family tree. I have names but need to look up the parents of some of my relitives. I am always running into dead ins. I already know the names but that is all I usualy get back. I NEED THE PARENTS NAME TOO. But no one has that info free. I am talking about people from the early 1900's and 1800's.

Hey mcdermond3,

The first answer gave a lot of the good sites. I will try not to repeat them. 1900 and 1800 there is much info on the web. Your VITAL RECORDs are most important leads. They are Birth, Death, Marriage, Deeds, Probate, etc. Obituaries are also great sources of information.

Use the GENFORUM site. Basically search for SURNAME FAMILY on Yahoo - tons of sites with people doing similar research.

The LDS Site (FAMILY SEARCH) is a highly trusted site! This works to get SSN and Death date and locations. From there you can write for the VITAL Records. Libraries in nearby towns will have obits for the Deaths - find them online too.

If you have any special concerns (Civil War Soldiers, Vetrans, Sailors, Native American, Immigrants, there are many great sites for them too. Use Cindys List to find some of those.

After you get started, use a Software package to track your data. I usually recommend FAMILY TREE MAKER - best one out there (no sales pitch). It lets you keep your data, scanned records, pictures, etc in one place.

Then start asking more specific questions. Especially on the GENFORUM sites. Lots of people to help you there, and they have a specific interest in the SURNAME you are researching.

Best of luck.
