I don't know about the shortest amount of time but for me (medical discharge during AIT) it took two weeks.

Be prepared for a lot of crap from the chain of command. They don't like their attrition rates to go up. They will put you on details constantly, etc. And your so-called "battle buddies" will look down on you as well. Prepare yourself emotionally for all of these things. Also prepare yourself for the inevitable feelings of failure. Just remind yourself that military service is not for everyone and some of us have to find this out the hard way. I've been out for over four years now and still sometimes deal with these feelings.

For a medical discharge you have to wait for the med board to approve your discharge and a lot of people have to sign off on your stuff. That's why it takes two weeks I suppose.

Fastest I have ever seen is four days. But expect about two weeks for this to get done. Unless you are pregnant, then they really kick it up to get you out of there.
