The rivers of India play an important role in the lives of the Indian people. The river systems provide irrigation, potable water, cheap transportation, electricity, as well as provide livelihoods for a large number of people all over the country. The rivers also have an important role in Hindu mythology and are considered holy by all Hindus in the country.
Seven major rivers along with their numerous tributaries make up the river system of India.
Ganges, or the Ganges, the holy river of the Hindus, is the longest river. The Godavari is the second longest river in India with a length of 1530 km and it has 16 major tributaries.
Some other rivers are:
Indus River has a total length of about 2897 km from the source to the point near Karachi where it falls into the Arabian Sea.
Jhelum River's total length is about 450 miles.
Chenab River about 600 mi (965 km) long and the source of an extensive canal and irrigation system.
Ravi River's length is about 720 km.
Beas River is 615 km long.
Sutlej River has a total length of almost 1500 km.
Ganga River is over 2700 km long.
Yamuna River has a total length of around 1370 km.

It is difficult to calculate the lenth of a river. However longest river in south india are 1.GODAVRI--1465 KM 2. KRISHNA -1300 KM both dump in Bay Of Bengal-
