ive heard alot of talk over the years that different colored cats make better or worse pets! like for say a calico is suppost to be a very mean cat, while an orange one is very loving & playful! Anyone really believe this or tell me your experiances with different colors of cats and thier behaviors/personalities

I have an orange kitten and a 17 year old calico at my moms....my vet actually used these 2 colors as a comparison when he told me this...my orange kitty is wonderful! loving, playful and just so much fun! my calico is very mean, hateful, lazy, and mean spirited (he father was like that too)

There is a lot of talk but I have seen the good and bad of both. It's a common misconception that most siamese cats are mean. Well I have met one super mean (my grandparents cat) yet mine is the most affectionate and lovable feline. All Cats have different personalities so you really need to meet the cat first before making assumptions.

Actually, colors of cats have been known to display different characteristics and behaviors. Some things have been passed down to tehm through natural selection and evolution. But I definately would not base a decision on that alone because just like races of people exhibit similarities no matter there station in life there are always exceptions.

I have a tortie....they are most always female, and i have observed them to either be really needy from there owner or be scared of everything, picky, or mean.

I have a orange tiger mixed with white- normally orange tigers are always males. very affectionate.........but i have met a few orange tigers that are extremely aggresive.

Grey tigers are usually very sweet and intelligent, and into everything. I work at a animal shelter. I suggest you go to a shelter and find a kitten to bond with and adopt it. That way you dont have to worry about what experiences have shaped thier moods all you get is 100% personality.....and behavior you can learn..

I have had many cats over the years and not really noticed a real difference with certain colors. I had a kitten that was half manx and she was a terror. She was calico too. I had a white persian and she was so sweet, my sister has a male white persian with a very sweet dispostion, and he doesn't even like people food. I have a black calico now, she is sweet when she wants to be, very very playful even tho she is ten yrs old. ... One thing I have noticed that gray tabbies tend to have a crazy personality, almost bipolar. AT least the two we had were that way, you never knew day to day what they were going to treat you.

Okay...currently, I have 5 cats and in the last 2 years have lost 2 others...I have 3 gray tabby cats and 2 of the 3 are very loving the other isn't so much. I have a calico cat...Molly and she is the most beautiful and sweetest cat. I have a black and White cat who is the queen b of the bunch. I had an orange cat and where she had her loving moments, she also had her evil moments. I had a solid grey cat that was wild...I think it is in how you raise them and their personalities!

I think the "make and model" of a cat can help define the personality is a very broad way. BUT I have a calico and she is very sweet and loving...so you can never tell. The best thing anyone can do is meet all the cats and learn about their individual personalities and try to pick the best cat as the new member of their household:)

I think it's got less to do with the color and more with breed and rearing. I have a gray tabby that is the sweetest attention hungry cat at you have ever seen and I also had one that was the biggest snob i the world. I think the big difference was I was a teenager when I had the snobby cat and it acted a lot like I did. Now I'm older and had spoiled this kitty and he is the life of the party, turning rabid cat haters in to mush. No joke, I caught my dad, who would just as soon kicked a cat as he would have kicked a rock if it was in his way, talking baby talk to him telling him he was the best little kitty ever. I thought maybe my dad had been abducted by aliens or had a stroke. Animal do have their our personality, but like us, a lot of who we are (basic core behavior)is because of how we were treated as children.

I read a book on that once and the only conclusion was that all grey cats were found to be the most shy.

The tri-colored cats, who are mostly always female, have a reputation for being more "difficult" than other cats. I think that is mostly that they are female rather than having a certain coloring.
The only thing I ever came across in my reading was that the genes for temperment are carried by the male cat to its kittens.

I've seen cats that LOOK like they should be nice, but aren't, and vice versa.

I'll bet the "mean calicos" thing exists because calicos are generally female.....and females CAN be a little meaner than females.

My orange cat is the most laid back lap cat ever....so I'll agree with that one:) But my female is a dilute calico, and she's perfectly sweet, too.

I've found that calico and tortoiseshell cats tend to be more skittish/nervous than others, but once they're used to you, they can be some of the most affectionate cats around.

How a cat is going to respond depends more on the individual cat than the color it is.

My best friend has an orange on that is so mean and standoffish. My black and white is really sweet and friendly, but I think it's all in Kitty Parenting not the color of cat.
