Because sweet yesterdays are only remembered for their great or horrible things.
Horrible things are fairly rare... good/great things happen more often.
People forget that everday is a test and you have to work even in the past tense.

Our clothes are washed in machines.
Hot food is available inexpensively just about everywhere.
Law enforcement does a good job keeping us safe.
Medical care and medicine have made huge advances.
I'm speaking only of life in America, but there's no other time I'd rather live than right now.

In general, it's because we all want "more" and there is more of us that want "it" Think of all the material goods that we have now that didn't exist then and how much we are paying for it.
(This answer pertains to harder to afford)
Otherwise, Life is much easier now than ever before.

If you look for the good instead of the bad, then it isn't.
It is all in how you choose to view things. Is see a lot of things as being easier today than it was yesterday.

Because we are rising to a very high level of civilization, we are facing the whole human race with all their diversities, we are mature.
Yes, we have to make greater effort in learning, laboring, loving to cope with our challenging and promising situation.
We are enjoying greater facilities than kings in the past, so we must conduct our lives better than kings; we have to serve the whole human race, so we must make and implement greater plans than kings.
In the past we depend on kings and mandarins, so we behave as low subjects. Now we are equal citizens, we must make equal effort.
