You can buy a humidifier, or a vaporizer. I have a Vicks brand Vaporizer that i got from wal-mart. To use it you add water and a pinch of salt, plug it in and in a few minutes it begins to puff out large steam vapor clouds and will continue to do so until the water gets low. Another way is to run the hot water in your shower for a while and close the door. The air will get so moist that mirrors will fog up! If you have a large pot that you can boil water on the stove in you may be able to add a little moisture to the air in the area around the stove. You can also purchase portable misting fans, they move the air the same as a regular portable fan plus they spray a fine mist of water into the air.

In dry climates like the southwest, people use swamp coolers instead of air conditioners. Unfortunately, where I live it is humid, so I don't know much detail on them, like whether you get window units or what. Basically they put cooled water into the air, raising humidity and cooling the temperature.
If you need something short term, there are humidifiers that put steam into the air, and the suggestion to boil water in the room offered earlier would work to.
