5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.7 So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.”

Genesis 6:5-7 (New King James Version)

Disclaimer: I'm an agnostic. Not trying to change anyones religion or hurt anyones feelings.

There is something wrong with my Bible, it seems to be written by someone who thinks that God uses natural disasters to punish human beings. I'm sorry, is this the intellectual equivalent of "we didn't sacrafice enough virgins to zeus thats why our wheat did not grow, now we must do rain dance"

Since I believe that God is Love, it seems logical to me that He would grieve for us, whom He loves, and before He sent Christ to die for us on the cross, he lashed out with disaster. That's why there is so much anger from Him in the Old Testament and the New is filled with Love. If you were a perfect being, wouldn't you be sad if you created something that wasn't what you'd hoped and knew it could become?

Jesus came to die for us and forgive our sins, those of us who have come after Him and those who came before.

God loves us, yes, but he also asks that we love Him and love each other. He created us, therefore we should fear Him, as we fear our parents' discipline when we are children. We as parents don't let our kids run rampant because we love them, we punish them and teach them the way to act because we love them.

God gives us more chances than we deserve, and punishes us fairly as He sees fit, because He loves us and knows that as we grow we will learn how to be humble, loving, compassionate, fair, and respectable people.

Genesis 6
The Flood
1 When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with [a] man forever, for he is mortal [b] ; his days will be a hundred and twenty years."
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

5 The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. 7 So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them." 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

9 This is the account of Noah.
Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. 10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

This is the passage right before God wipes out everyone in the flood. Nothing wrong with your bible. This isn't the only time the bible contradicts God's love of man.
The bible preaches unconditional love, but God gets to pick and choose conditions for which Man gets to live with "free" will.

I don't believe the bible in its current translations. I do however believe that if the Bible is A divine work that God's words to each of us can be heard when each of us read it. Not when some pedophile preaches it to us. The church, and religion are nothing more than political conduits to raise money. Power, propaganda, and influence. Most radicals in any religion don't really know the religion, they trust what they have been taught with blind "faith."

I think you have answered your own question, where you quote that God saw that wickedness filled the earth, Man was created to serve God, You are quoting Gen.6:5-7. You have to understand that in Gen. 6 we are looking at a time span of almost 2000 yrs. from the creation of Adam & Eve And in those 2000 yrs. sin had downgraded mankind so much that God was grieaved so much to see how far mankind has drifted from him. But this did not take God by surprise. I Hope this can help you. No the bible is not wrong nor does it contridict itself. We just have to know how to read & Understand it.

The bible is a mixed of fact, fable and error. Within each of these aspects there are functional and dysfunctional spiritual concepts. In my opinion the passage you are reading a tribal fable basically dissing all tribes out side of the remnant of Israel.

Using this passage to think about metaphysics you could glean that God does indeed exist (not always how we conceive God to be) and (wo)mankind has freewill in which can be used for evil.

The error lies that (wo)man is mostly evil in his/her use of his God given freewill and that God being perfect would be sorrowful for creating anything.

Though we have been given freewill we often use it towards good such as helping our fellow brothers and sisters when they are in need, our appreciation and creation of beauty, our love for family and friends, our ability to be self aware and to seek beyond its boundaries. Often these are the mediums we chose to engage in. It is a cynical philosophy that only sees the evil in the world. It has been said that cynicism is the cheapest form of intellectualism.

In any case people should not take the bible too seriously but like any religious text they should use it to gain ideas about spiritual, moral, and civic functional possibilities. With those ideas they can put them to the test via and combination of logic, life experiences and heart/intuition. If these ideas do not fit in with the rest of reality and or cause needless suffering, we need to be big enough to see this effect with out logic, intuition and heart and throw the dirty bathwater out, replacing it with what is clean, fresh, and clear.

oh for petes sake..would you please quit picking and choosing scripture and perverting them to fit YOUR ideals. verse 5= the bible's most vivid discriptions of total depravity of mans nature. verse 6= the Lord was sorry...He was grieved in His heart...mans sin is God's sorrow (eph 4/30.) verse 7=the period of grace (verse 3 and note) was coming to an end. And tho morally innocent, the animal world, as creatures "under man's corrupted rule", shared in his judgement. There's nothing wrong with your Bible.......there's something wrong with your interpretation because as an agnostic you have not been blessed with the Holy Spirits TRUTH; and if you think you know the truth, you are blatently mocking it...............

You know what would have been helpful? Some kind of instruction on just where god's "enough is enough" line is. He put up with wickedness up till that point, so what was the straw that broke the camel's back (so to speak)? Just how much fornication is ok before he opens up a can of natural disaster on our @sses?

Virgins, animals whatever.... The bible is what it is and won't change however we have, we know about science and meteorology so we don't have to rely on the bible for explanations of hurricanes, floods and tornados.

How do we really know what's true or not? If "God" is sorry he created man, why does he allow new life to be born? I'm sooooooooo tired of religion controversy, makes the world crazy.
