You have a painting with a string attached to it. The string is attached to the upper two corners of the painting. In the wall there are two nails, horizontally next to each other. The string must be hung on the nails in such a way that the painting falls down if any of the two nails is pulled out of the wall. The painting must hang under the nails and must hang on the string. The Question: How must the painting be hung?

If the painting is hung very close to the floor, so that its bottom is against the floor AND wall, and its front is only one inch or so off the floor. Use a long string with the nails at least 6 inches apart or so. If either nail is removed, the painting will fall to the floor.

I would have to say that the nails were nails that were rated to hold half of the weight of the painting. Example you needed a 30 lb nail but only had two 15lb nails. I have actually had this happen to me before so I know it is right.... Now the question is... is that what you were thinking or are there other reasons also.

if the string was long enough, you could wrap it around the two nails in one pass and then tuck it under the string that would then run between the two nails. This should accomplish all of the conditions.

The string is draped across the nails and carries no load.
The weight of the painting rests on top of the nails.

In the wall, the nails must be very loose. So then when one falls out, the other will fall out to and the painting will fall, and crash.
