Sounds like either and infection or an allergic reaction (you can develope them after a while)
clean with sea salt and see a doctor if it gets worse.
you might have to change to pure gold

There are a few reasons this could be happening - what type of jewellery do you have in (eg what metal typle) is it silver or gold plated? Sugical Stainless Steel? Titanium? I ask this because you may have developed a sensitivity to nickel - I can wear surgical stainless steel in fresh piercings because it has some nickel in it but Im fine with titanium (very very little if any nickel in this) I know your piercing is not fresh but you may have become sensitive to it..
Another thing is - is it possible you are playing with it with unwashed hands? Maybe you have a bit of an infection happening - in which case see your GP for some antibiotics.
Thirdly - What type of clothing are you wearing? Is the jewellery rubbing against jeans that could be causing the irritation?
These are the only things I can think of - stomach piercings have a habbit of migrating or growing out - I wouldnt expect it would be doing this after 6 years but if there is an infection there your body could push the jewellery out so maybe a visit to the GP just to be sure.

Soap and water cleanings, and give it salt water soaks as well - avoid the alcohol and peroxide, since they both can irritate new/healing cells.
Salt water soaks - warm water, with enough salt to make it about as salty as your tears. Put it in a shot glass, and invert that over your navel pierce. Let it sit for a couple minutes, and do this whenever you get a chance.
The posters re: metal allergies have good information too - you may have an allergy to the metal (a lot of people have nickel sensitivity, and surgical steel has nickel in it.). Try trading your current jewelry for either a niobium or titanium piece. Both are pretty much hypoallergenic. (I had an issue with this with my rook pierce - I took out the surgical steel ring and put a titanium one in, and it soon cleared up). I tend to avoid sterling silver and gold in body pierces.
You don't mention what style of jewelry you have in it, but I also found my navel pierce behaved better with a curved barbell than a ring, so if you have a ring in it, you might give that a try.
It'll take a couple of days at least, but as long as you're keeping it clean, and not irritating it with clothing or playing with it. If it's still giving you problems, go see your piercer, and if his/her suggestions yield no results, go see a doctor.
Good luck!

Old piercings can get infected too. Get some anti-bacterial soap (Dial liquid is good) and clean it well twice a day. Put a small drop of soap on the ring and run it back and forth thru the piercing -- rinse well. It may sting the first couple of times you clean it. After cleaning and rinsing, apply some peroxide or alcohol. If you don't see improvement within a week, go to the doctor.

You did not mention the type of metal used in the piercing.
It is possible that it was coated, say with gold or nickle, and has worn down to brass or some other metal.
Best talk with a dermatologist - they will explain to you that people can have allergic reactions to some types of metal.
They might have some creams to help relieve the red/itchy feeling.
If metal allergy is the problem, you best replace the ring with a HIGH quality metal ring (or whatever you have stuck in you)...again, check with your dermatologist to select which metal will not cause an allergic reaction.

It depends what the bellybutton ring is made of and the shape. If its not sterling silver, the coating they put on fake jewelry will start to come off and you could be allergic to it. If it has a pointed edge, that will scratch the inside when you like sit down ect.. try wearing a rounded plastic belly button ring for a little while and see if it clears up.

Have you recently been wearing low-rider jeans that are tight and rug up against you belly piercing? Or if youre partner has been playing with it that can cause irritation...Just put some neosporin on it and air it out without it being touched for a few days and that should do the trick!!! Good Luck :)

You may have caught an infection. Or the metal you used for the ornament may have reacted with some chemicals in the bath or outside and then must be causing the irritation. Please show it to a doctor. All the best.

Treat it like it was brand new....clean with alcohol gel and treat with antibiotic cream. And get a new (at least 14 carat) gold keeper.

Maybe you put in a new ring and you might have been allergic to it or something. Or maybe it was the solution. I hope it feels better and good luck with the rash
