Bonny Rogue - Freethinker is not my term. Do a little research before you open your mouth and insert your foot.

I agree completely with BonnyRogue. While "freethinker" may not be a term you invented, you are using it, so you need to take responsibility for the implications of what you're saying. You are implying that people who believe in God don't think for themselves -- that anyone who thinks for themselves would be an atheist.

I'm a Christian BECAUSE I'm a freethinker. I'm a Christian because I didn't believe the doctor's report that I'd never be healthy, that I'd have problems for the rest of my life, I didn't believe the teachers and counselors who said I wasn't smart enough and I didn't believe the "friends" who degraded me. I'm a Christian because I questioned the Devil's lies and was able to see that God had a greater purpose for me.

Many atheists are not atheists because they are free-thinkers: they are just rebelling against their parents or their childhood religion. Same with many religious people: they change religion because they get to the age of reason (usually teens) and realize the religion now in their brain does not make sense. So rather than realizing it doesnt make sense because it is their childhood understanding of something greater, they dump it or change to another one. This is not free-thinking: this is tunnel-thinking. Its very hard to see beyond sometimes because even the walls of the tunnel are painted pretty.

But just like some atheists are indeed free-thinkers, so are some religous people, who do not settle into a comforable, effortless belief system, but now have a process in place to challenge common beliefs, even their own currently accepted beliefs.

When this is the case, good web sites and books no longer are limited to ones which already confirm what you already believe. Sites with information which disagree with your standpoint are not then see as irrelevant or just 'funny'. The entire worlds religious writings, philosophies, histories, science: all of it is challenging and interesting.

Love Betty Bowers. Her real-life counterpart, Ann Coultergeist, is a psycho clown. Other good sites:

Note to she who needs it (answerer above me):
"freethinker n. a person who forms opinions on the basis of reason, independent of authority or tradition, esp. a person whose religious opinions differ from established belief."

I do not know about websites but if I see anything in the media about American 'TV evangelists ' I don't know whether I want to laugh or throw up. "God spoke to to me and he says juhst send me a hundert dollars and ah will save your soul, praise the loward !" and apparently some suckers actually do.

I like to fart while thinking about evolution. Do you think animals have always been able to fart, or is it a trait that evolved over time? Can you imagine how loud a dinosaur fart must have been!
