My 17 mth old son is sick this week, after trying to make him better, with OTC cold remedies, I decided to take him to Dr., to rule out sinusitus. I knew that would require an antibiotic. I am not pleased with this Dr., but was giving him one more chance, which proved almost dangerous to my son! First, and this is part one of my ?, the Dr said that he could not have a sinus infection ,because he does not have sinuses at this age. Has anyone else EVER heard of this? Then this is the really bad thing, he prescribed Rondec Oral, for his cold. I went to several local pharmacies, and they did not have it. The last one told me that they could not have it because it had been RECALLED, pulled off the market! Because of the "harmful" long lasting effects of the drug that was in it, chlorpheniramine. This is my ? Aren't Dr.'s suppossed to be on top of the medications? His ofc acted like this was a normal thing! I think he should have known, what do you think??

I am definitely changing Dr.'s, I just think about all the other children that he is "caring" for. All the times that I trust a dr and do not ? the prescription, and I know that I am not the only one that just blatantly trust the Dr. that writes out the script....just wanting to know why he is not notified of recalls when they happen and if a toddler does indeed have sinuses, because other web sites said they did.

IMHO: get a new doctor. If this person is in charge of your child they NEED to know what they are talking about. He obviously does not, so its time to get someone else.

Hi,
Sorry to hear your little tyke is ill. I remember the days! There are SOOO many drugs out there that while its unfortunate that your Dr didnt know, its really what they have Pharmecists for! That is the REASON Dr's are not in charge of the actual meds. There are just too many out there. Im more disturbed that you had to go to so many pharmacists before one finally told you that it was recalled.
I have never heard one way or the other about how the sinus developes. Guess I always assumed we were born with them.
Wow...things that make ya go "hmmmm".
If you are really this unhappy with the Dr, definetly find a new one. Is this Dr a Pediatrician? If not, I would try to find a Peds so that your confidence in their knowledge of youngsters was eased.
My advice: Find a new Dr and maybe even call the drug stores you that didnt tell you the drug was recalled and ask THEM if they were aware of its recall. Then ask them WHY they didnt tell you to save you time running all over the place looking for it!

My son had a sinus infection, and he was about 18 months old at the time. Maybe sinuses "grow in" at different rates...? Just kidding, but I do think you should find a new doctor. Our pediatrician comes highly recommended by several of my friends with kiddos a little bit older. And we are lucky enough to know the peds nurse personally. Do you have any connections like that, or someone to recommend another pediatrician??

When I was a kid, my mom and all of her sisters with kids took them to the same pediatirican. One time my cousin had these strange looking spots all over his body. The doc didn't know what they were, so-and I kid you not-he burned them off with a match. They turned out to be chicken pox. Needless to say, we swithed Drs. That is very strange about your doc, so go with your gut. Good luck.

Not only should you not see this doctor, but you should report him to your state medical board. The medication screw up I think is forgivable. When you think about how many medications are on the market it can't be easy to stay current with all of them. What gets me is his saying that children develop sinus'. A sinus is simply a cavity in a body. It's always there, you can't remove it, nothing. I guess the old joke applies to him: What do you call the guy who graduates last in medical school? Doctor.

I think you need to find a new doctor ! Those OTC med were pulled a long time ago and he should have known that. Talk to other mothers you trust about their doctors and pick one they recommend. Never pick a doctor out of the phone book .

I think I might report a doctor for prescribing a medicine that was dangerous to a child.

I think you should report this guy...he sounds dangerous! I went to three different doctors until I found the one that now cares for my kids...he's absolutely wonderful...ask friends and family for a recommendation.

By the way children do have sinuses when they are young, they are just underdeveloped until age 20...they can still get sinusitis!

WOW not sure about the sinues thing, but I have heard about it before. As far as the recalled meds, I think I would find a new Ped. Especially if you have had problems with him before. OH yeah, is this a military doctor? They tend to do stuff like this.

Yes he should know. Doctors are like any other professionals, they have to stay on top of everything and continue to learn all of the latest developments, Just like teachers they have to make sure they are finely tuned and have to be trained every so often. Learning for doctors doesn't stop after the hippocratic oath. Excuse the spelling of hippocratic. I wasn't sure of how to spell it.
